IIM Amritsar Review 2026: Placements, Fees, Admissions & Honest Verdict
IIM Amritsar review 2026. Honest breakdown of placements, fees, admissions cutoffs, alumni and who should actually apply. From Collvera's editorial.
IIM Amritsar placed 96.63% of its Class 2023-25 (audit-certified by V.V. Bhalla & Co., Nov 2025), with ₹19.11 LPA average top-20% and ₹25.86 LPA highest. That 96.63% rate is among the cleanest numbers from any baby IIM. The defining edge: this is a GoI-established IIM (15th IIM, 2015) with ₹21.50 L 2-year fees, placed in Punjab where BFSI recruiters (ICICI, Kotak, BNP Paribas, Axis) and Big Four consulting (Deloitte, EY, KPMG, PwC) recruit because it's an IIM, not because Amritsar has a GCC ecosystem. The honest weaknesses: only top-20% stats published (full-batch median unknown), 31% of placements verified via unsigned letters, and 83% male cohort is heavily skewed.
- →Best for Finance/BFSI careers at 88–92 percentile CAT, 35% Finance domain share is highest among baby IIMs
- →₹21.50 L 2-year total (Year 1 ₹11.00 L + Year 2 ₹10.50 L), cheaper than IIM Indore, Kozhikode
- →Institute of National Importance status under IIM Act 2017, brand carries north of the Vindhyas
- →Skip if you're competitive for IIM Indore/Kozhikode/Lucknow (97+ percentile) or need guaranteed marketing/FMCG roles
- →Run eligibility against IIM Amritsar cutoffs in 60 seconds
The number that tells the real story
258 of 267 students who opted into placements were placed. That's 96.63%, audit-certified by V.V. Bhalla & Co. Chartered Accountants (UDIN 25534281BMITDH7340, dated 17 November 2025). It is the cleanest disclosure among baby IIMs, where most schools publish placement rates without independent verification.
That certification matters because the auditor's scope note explicitly flags that 79 of 258 placements (31%) were assessed via job descriptions, unsigned offer letters, or Institute undertaking, not signed offers. The school chose to publish that caveat rather than bury it. That is honesty most Indian B-schools don't practice.
The second number: 35% of Class 2022-24 placements were in Finance domain. That is the highest Finance share among all baby IIMs. ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Axis Bank, BNP Paribas, American Express, and CRISIL recruit here consistently. Not because IIM Amritsar is in Mumbai or Bangalore, but because it's an IIM and the Finance curriculum is solid.
Those two data points, the audit-certified 96.63% rate and the 35% Finance domain dominance, are the lens to read this review through. IIM Amritsar (founded 2015 by the Ministry of Education, NIRF unranked but holds Institute of National Importance status under IIM Act 2017) is a baby IIM where the placements infrastructure works, the fees are reasonable (₹21.50 L for 2 years), and the brand carries weight in north India BFSI and consulting markets.
It is not IIM Ahmedabad. It is a structurally sound tier-2 IIM where the top half of the batch gets Finance and Consulting roles at ₹18–22 LPA, and the lower half outcome is undisclosed. Both halves of that sentence matter.
This piece breaks down what the school actually delivers in 2026: placements (with the disclosure gaps made explicit), fees, admissions, campus reality at the new Manawala site, and where the honest weaknesses are. For the full dossier (faculty roster, every fee line-item, academic calendar), the IIM Amritsar college page has the structured view.
The verdict, up front
If your CAT score lands between 88 and 94 percentile, your academic record is strong (Class 10/12/Bachelor's consistently 75%+), and your target sector is BFSI or Big Four consulting, IIM Amritsar delivers a credible MBA outcome at a fee point (₹21.50 L) that beats most tier-2 schools.
The ROI math is defensible for the top half of admits: ₹19.11 L average top-20% against ₹21.50 L fees is roughly 13.5 months payback. The full-batch median is not published, so below-median outcome is structurally unknown.
If you're competitive for IIM Indore, Kozhikode, or Lucknow (CAT 96+ percentile), go there. The median outcome is materially higher and the brand gap is real. If you want pure-play FMCG brand management (HUL, P&G, Marico), IIM Amritsar is the wrong fit, Marketing/Sales absorbed only 15% of Class 22-24 placements.
Placements 2023-25: what the audit says (and doesn't say)
The V.V. Bhalla & Co. audit certificate covers Class 2023-25 only. Historical data from Class 2022-24 provides industry/domain mix context, but those numbers are not audit-certified.
| Metric | Class 2023-25 (Audit-certified) | Class 2022-24 (Unaudited) |
|---|---|---|
| Batch size | 318 | 277 |
| Interested in placements | 267 | (not disclosed) |
| Placed | 258 | (not disclosed) |
| Placement rate | 96.63% | (not disclosed) |
| Average Top 20% | ₹19.11 LPA | ₹19.73 LPA (Top 25%) |
| Median Top 20% | ₹18.00 LPA | ₹18.01 LPA (Top 25%) |
| Highest CTC | ₹25.86 LPA (incl. 2 intl) | ₹28.00 LPA (domestic), ₹58.52 LPA (intl) |
The transparency gap you need to understand
The average and median figures shown reflect Top 20% only, not the full batch. The placement report does not publish overall batch average or median CTC. This is standard practice at several baby IIMs, but it is a disclosure gap that makes it impossible to assess the median student outcome.
If you fall in the top 20% (roughly the top 50–60 students), the ₹19.11 L average is your expected band. If you fall in the middle 50%, your outcome is structurally unknown from public data.
BFSI: the defining strength
38% of Class 2022-24 placements went to BFSI sector. The recruiter list includes ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Kotak Life, Axis Bank, Bandhan Bank, BNP Paribas, American Express, CRISIL (S&P Global), AnandRathi, Tata Capital, ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, SBI Funds Management, SBICAPS, TVS Credit, Digit Insurance, and Universal Sompo General Insurance.
This is not a curated "aspirational recruiter" list. These are repeat employers hiring for credit analysis, risk analytics, financial planning, wealth management, corporate banking, and treasury operations roles.
The 35% Finance domain share is the hard signal. For context: MDI Gurgaon and SIBM Pune typically place 22–28% in Finance. IIM Amritsar is structurally Finance-heavy because the BFSI recruiter base is deep and the curriculum emphasizes quantitative finance and risk management.
Consulting: Big Four plus mid-tier
24% of Class 2022-24 went to Consulting. The Big Four are all regular recruiters: Deloitte India and USI, EY, KPMG, PwC. Add Accenture, Infosys Consulting, Merilytics (Accordion), Tiger Analytics, Axtria, Genpact, and Infosys BPM.
Some of these are pure strategy consulting. Others are operations consulting, data/analytics consulting, or process implementation. A student placed at Deloitte USI Strategy & Operations is doing different work than one placed at Infosys BPM.
The 24% Consulting share is comparable to peer baby IIMs (IIM Kashipur, Raipur, Ranchi). It is materially below tier-1 schools where 35–45% go into Consulting.
Tech/Analytics: the third cluster
16% of Class 2022-24 went to Technology/Analytics/IT. Recruiters include Amazon, TCS, Infosys, HCL, Wipro, Cognizant, Tech Mahindra, IBM, Tiger Analytics, Incedo, Jade Global, Brillio, Mphasis, and Newgen.
A portion of these are tech product management or analytics strategy roles. A larger portion are IT services account management, business analyst, or digital transformation consulting roles at ₹14–18 LPA.
The honest weakness: FMCG and consumer marketing are thin
6% of Class 2022-24 went to FMCG/FMCD. The recruiter list includes Tata Consumer Products, Red Bull, United Breweries (UB), DS Group, Country Delight, and Starbucks. Notably absent: HUL, P&G, Marico, ITC, Nestlé India.
Marketing/Sales absorbed 15% of Class 2022-24 domain placements, materially below MDI Gurgaon (25–30%), SIBM Pune (28–32%), or MICA Ahmedabad (50%+).
If your career goal is brand management at a top FMCG, IIM Amritsar is the wrong school. The placement support system is optimized for Finance and Consulting, not consumer marketing.
Manufacturing is decent, not dominant
7% of Class 2022-24 went to Manufacturing. The recruiter list is credible: Tata Steel, Tata Power, Tata Advanced Systems, Hindustan Zinc, ISGEC, Haldia Petrochemicals, Hitachi, Suzlon, Schneider Electric, Siemens, Aditya Birla Chemicals, Larsen & Toubro, Havells, Cadila Pharmaceuticals, Hyundai, Eicher (Volvo Eicher), Yamaha, Ather, and Panasonic.
This is a B2B and industrial manufacturing recruiter base, not consumer durables. Students targeting supply chain, operations, procurement, or industrial sales roles find support. Students targeting consumer brand operations at HUL or P&G will not.
The long tail is real but undisclosed
The ₹19.11 L average top-20% and ₹25.86 L highest tell you about the top band. They do not tell you about the bottom quartile, where students who entered without Finance/Consulting clarity land.
Anecdotal feedback from students (Collvera off-the-record conversations) suggests the lower quartile outcome is ₹12–15 LPA IT services and BPO roles. At ₹21.50 L total fees, that is a weak return.
IIM Amritsar's placement infrastructure is optimized for Finance and Consulting. Students outside that pattern need to self-navigate with less institutional tailwind.
Fees, scholarships, and the ROI math
MBA/MBA-BA/MBA-HR 2026-28 (official fee document, dated 10 April 2026)
The fee structure is identical for all three flagship programmes: MBA (General Management), MBA-BA (Business Analytics), and MBA-HR (Human Resources).
Year 1 (Terms 1-3)
- ▸Programme fee: ₹9.75 L
- ▸Caution deposit: ₹50,000 (refundable)
- ▸Mess deposit: ₹75,000 (excess refunded at year-end)
- ▸Year 1 Total: ₹11.00 L
Year 2 (Terms 4-6)
- ▸Programme fee: ₹9.75 L
- ▸Mess deposit: ₹75,000 (excess refunded)
- ▸Year 2 Total: ₹10.50 L
All-in 2-year total: ₹21.50 L (₹21.00 L net of the refundable ₹50K caution deposit).
Breakdown of the ₹9.75 L per year
The fee document does not split tuition vs infrastructure vs activities. The ₹9.75 L annual programme fee is composite. Adding the mess deposit (adjusted against actual usage, excess refunded), the effective annual cost is roughly ₹10.35 L.
Comparable baby IIM fees:
- ▸IIM Indore PGP: ₹23–25 L (2 years)
- ▸IIM Kozhikode PGP: ₹19–21 L
- ▸IIM Lucknow PGP: ₹14–16 L (lowest among top baby IIMs)
- ▸IIM Nagpur/Visakhapatnam: ₹20–22 L (similar tier)
IIM Amritsar at ₹21.50 L sits in the mid-tier baby IIM fee band, materially cheaper than IIM Indore and comparable to IIM Kozhikode.
Scholarships: standard IIM policy applies
The fee document references "need-based and merit-based scholarships (standard IIM policy)" but does not disclose specific schemes or amounts. Verify exact eligibility and award quantum with the admissions office before assuming scholarship availability.
Most IIMs offer:
- ▸Need-based scholarships for EWS/Below Poverty Line candidates (tuition waiver or reduction)
- ▸Merit scholarships for top 5–10% of admits (₹50K–₹2 L awards)
- ▸SC/ST fee concessions per government norms
ROI per programme
Top-20% ROI is among the cleanest in baby IIM tier. ₹19.11 L average top-20% CTC against ₹21.50 L total fees is roughly 13.5 months payback. For the median student in the top quintile (₹18 L CTC), payback extends to 14.3 months.
Full-batch median ROI is structurally unknown because median CTC is not published. If the full-batch median is ₹14–15 LPA (anecdotal estimate), payback extends to 18–21 months.
The fee document notes that admission acceptance fee of ₹1,00,000 is adjusted against Term 1 fees: ₹50K caution deposit + ₹25K mess deposit + ₹25K programme fee. This is standard across IIMs.
Education loans: standard partner banks
The fee document does not list specific loan partner banks or rates. Standard IIM education-loan partners apply: SBI, HDFC Credila, Axis Bank, Canara Bank. Expect 9.5–12% interest rates with a moratorium period until 6–12 months post-graduation.
For the full loan picture across MBA programmes, our education loans guide breaks down rates, repayment, and moratorium terms.
Admissions: the bar, the process, and what actually gets you in
The cutoff reality
IIM Amritsar follows the standard IIM admissions pipeline: CAT score → Application Rating shortlist → WAT (Written Ability Test) + Personal Interview → Composite Score → final offer.
Eligibility baseline: Bachelor's degree with minimum 50% aggregate (45% for SC/ST/PwD) from a recognised institution + valid CAT score.
CAT percentile cutoff: IIM Amritsar does not publish official CAT cutoffs. Anecdotal benchmarks based on Collvera analysis of peer baby IIMs and admit profiles:
- ▸General category: 90–94 percentile for WAT-PI shortlist
- ▸OBC-NCL: 82–88 percentile
- ▸SC/ST: 65–75 percentile
- ▸PwD: 60–70 percentile
At 95+ percentile, IIM Amritsar is a safe backup while targeting IIM Indore/Kozhikode/Lucknow. At 88–92 percentile, it's a realistic primary target. Below 85 percentile, shortlisting becomes difficult even with strong academics.
Accepted exams
CAT only. IIM Amritsar does not accept XAT, GMAT, NMAT, MAT, or CMAT for the flagship MBA/MBA-BA/MBA-HR programmes.
(The Executive MBA and PhD programmes may accept GMAT or other tests, verify separately if applicable.)
Shortlisting weights: Application Rating
The Application Rating composite drives the WAT-PI shortlist. IIM Amritsar publishes year-specific weights in its annual admission policy. Weights vary year-to-year. Typical baby IIM weighting structure:
- ▸CAT sectional + overall percentile: 40–50%
- ▸Class 10 marks: 10–15%
- ▸Class 12 marks: 10–15%
- ▸Bachelor's marks: 10–15%
- ▸Work experience: 5–10%
- ▸Gender diversity: 2–5%
- ▸Academic diversity: 2–5%
Key insight: Application Rating gives material weight to Class 10/12/Bachelor's marks. A CAT 95 percentile applicant with weak Class 12 (60%) may not survive shortlisting. A CAT 88 percentile applicant with strong academics (85%+ consistent) has a real shot.
The process steps
Stage I: Application + Rating Shortlist
- 1Apply at iimamritsar.ac.in/admissions with CAT registration number, academic transcripts, work-ex documents.
- 2Application Rating composite calculated per published weights.
- 3WAT-PI shortlist announced (typically January–February post-CAT).
Stage II: WAT + Personal Interview
- 1Written Ability Test (30–45 minutes, essay-style topic on current affairs, business, or ethics).
- 2Personal Interview by IIM Amritsar faculty panel (15–25 minutes, conversational + analytical).
- 3Interview centres across major Indian cities (location preference indicated in application).
What is assessed: Communication clarity, current affairs awareness, analytical depth on WAT topic, motivation for MBA, leadership examples, decision-making frameworks.
Stage III: Composite Score + Offer
- 1Final composite score = CAT score + WAT score + PI score + academic record + work-ex per published weights.
- 2Final rank decides offer + scholarship eligibility.
- 3Offer acceptance via ₹1,00,000 admission fee (adjusted against Term 1 fees).
Class 2023-25 cohort profile (audit-certified)
Understanding who gets in helps calibrate your own profile.
Batch size: 318 students (audit-certified) Gender: 83% Male, 17% Female (heavily male-skewed, worsened from 75/25 in Class 22-24) Work experience: Average 28 months across cohort. 60% Freshers, 40% Experienced. Education background:
- ▸30% B.Com/BA/BBA/BSc
- ▸14% CSE/Analytics/IT
- ▸12% Electrical/Electronics
- ▸12% Mechanical
- ▸10% Civil
- ▸7% Accounts/Finance/Banking
- ▸13% Others
Work-ex sectors (for the 40% experienced):
- ▸34% Analytics/IT/Telecom
- ▸25% Manufacturing/Engineering/Construction
- ▸10% Ed-Tech
- ▸6% Healthcare/Pharma
- ▸5% FMCG/Retail
- ▸4% Banking
- ▸16% Others
Regional diversity: 24 states represented. Top feeders: Uttar Pradesh 55, Maharashtra 39, Bihar 34, Punjab 23, Madhya Pradesh 22.
Feeder institutes: IIT, IIIT, IISER, DU, NIT, IHM, BIT, BHU, AIIMS, broad mix, not dominated by any single institution.
Application strategy (Collvera notes, not official IIM Amritsar guidance)
CAT score band: At 90–94 percentile with strong academics (Class 10/12/Bachelor's 80%+), you clear the Application Rating bar. Non-engineer or female candidates often clear with slightly lower percentiles due to diversity weighting.
Academic record sweet spot: Application Rating weights Class 10 + Class 12 + Bachelor's heavily. Strong consistency through school + UG = significant edge. A 95 percentile CAT with 65% Class 12 may lose to a 90 percentile CAT with 85% Class 12.
Work-ex sweet spot: IIM Amritsar accepts a large fresher share (60% in Class 23-25) but profile-rich freshers + 12–36 months work-ex are both well-represented. More than 5 years of work-ex is rare and may face age-related questions in the PI.
Common mistakes to avoid
Weak Class 12 marks: Class 10/12 academic component cannot be made up by CAT score alone, it is part of the Application Rating. A strong CAT 95+ percentile applicant with weak Class 12 may not survive shortlisting.
Generic WAT essays: WAT essays evaluated on structure + originality + argument strength. Generic "AI will replace jobs" answers without specific examples fail. Practice essays on contemporary issues with named examples (companies, policies, thought leaders).
Skipping work-ex prep: For experienced candidates, PI panel probes deeply on workplace examples, leadership demonstrated, conflict resolution. Treat work-ex as a major PI topic, not an afterthought.
Do you clear Indian Institute of Management Amritsar's bar?
The campus: what the new Manawala site actually offers
IIM Amritsar recently moved to its new permanent campus at Village Manawala, P.O. Jandiala Guru, SO Amritsar, Punjab 143115. Earlier housed at Punjab Institute of Technology Building, Polytechnic Road, Chheharta (the address used in Class 22-24 documents).
The new campus sits on the outskirts of Amritsar, home to the Golden Temple and Jallianwala Bagh. Specific campus acreage not disclosed in available documents.
Infrastructure: fully residential, well-equipped
Highlights (from About IIMAm section of placement report):
- ▸Auditorium, computer center, library, sports facilities, recreation room, jam room
- ▸24/7 academic support, well-equipped library and computing centre
- ▸First-rate dorms for students (fully residential model)
- ▸Vibrant common spaces, student clubs, residential facilities for collaboration
- ▸Cafeteria and shopping facilities on-campus
- ▸Solar panels visible on academic block roof (aerial photo from placement report)
The placement report shows photos of modern classroom blocks, hostel wings, and green landscaping. The infrastructure appears comparable to other baby IIM campuses (IIM Kashipur, Raipur, Ranchi), functional, clean, not luxury-tier but far above private B-school median.
Hostel: Fully residential, dorms/hostels on-campus for all flagship programme students. Mess on campus, actual mess expenses adjusted against the ₹75K annual deposit; excess refunded year-end (per fee document).
Location reality: Amritsar is a tier-2 city with strong cultural and historical significance (Golden Temple, Wagah Border, Partition Museum). It is not a business/corporate hub like Mumbai, Bangalore, or Gurgaon. Recruiter access requires travel; most recruiters fly in for placement week or conduct virtual interviews.
For students who value cultural richness + lower cost of living + quieter environment, Amritsar is a feature. For students who want spontaneous corporate networking or startup ecosystem access, it is a constraint.
Curriculum: 2 years, 6 terms, General Management + specialisations
Structure: 2 years · 6 terms · fully residential · General Management MBA
Pedagogy (from Curriculum.docx):
- ▸Classroom lectures with case studies (Harvard Business School case collection subscription)
- ▸Group projects and cross-functional projects
- ▸Industry visits
- ▸Simulation activities (business simulations, role-plays)
- ▸Live industry assignments and company immersions
- ▸Continuous guest sessions in technology-enabled classrooms
Specialisations:
- ▸General Management (MBA flagship), broad curriculum, electives across Finance, Marketing, Operations, Strategy, HR
- ▸Business Analytics (MBA-BA), specialisation track from intake, deeper analytics curriculum
- ▸Human Resources (MBA-HR), specialisation track from intake, SHRM-aligned HR curriculum
The MBA-BA and MBA-HR are separate intake streams, not post-admission electives. Applicants typically rank preference (MBA > MBA-BA > MBA-HR) within a single application.
Additional programmes (not covered in this review):
- ▸Executive MBA (EMBA), working professionals
- ▸M.Sc. in Data Science and Management (MSDSM), with IIT Ropar (joint programme, separate audit report)
- ▸PhD in Management, 4–5 years, academic/research careers
- ▸Integrated Programme in Management (IPM), newly launched, 5-year after Class 12
Faculty: IIM-standard, younger than ABC
IIM Amritsar has full-time faculty across Finance, Marketing, Operations, Strategy, OB/HR, Economics, IT/Analytics. Specific faculty count not disclosed in placement report.
Being a 10-year-old institution (established 2015), faculty composition skews younger than IIM A/B/C/L (which have 40–60 year histories). Most faculty hold PhDs from IIMs, IITs, ISB, or international universities (US/Europe).
The Rekhi Centre of Excellence and Centre for Entrepreneurship and MSMEs are referenced in source folder documents but detailed scope not extracted into this file.
International exposure pathways
IIM Amritsar references foreign university exchange programmes on its About page. Specific partner universities not enumerated in the placement report.
(Contrast with GLIM Chennai, which lists SKEMA France, HHL Leipzig Germany, IÉSEG France, NUCB Japan, etc. IIM Amritsar's international partnerships are less formalised or less marketed.)
The honest campus reality
IIM Amritsar is a 10-year-old baby IIM with solid infrastructure but not the legacy depth of older IIMs. The campus is new (Manawala site operational for Class 23-25 onwards), construction and amenities are modern but the ecosystem around it is still maturing.
For students who value brand + structured placement support + reasonable fees, the campus is a non-issue. For students who want iconic campus heritage (IIM A's Louis Kahn-designed dorms, IIM B's lush Bangalore setting), IIM Amritsar is not that.
The alumni network: credible but young
IIM Amritsar's first batch graduated in 2017 (MBA 2015-17). As of 2026, the alumni base is roughly 10 cohorts deep. Adding MBA-BA, MBA-HR, EMBA, and PhD cohorts, total alumni count is likely in the 2,000–3,000 range.
The honest framing on the network
A 10-year-old institution has structurally thinner CXO-level density than schools with 40–60 year histories (IIM A/B/C, XLRI, FMS, MDI). Even the oldest IIM Amritsar alumni are only 9 years out (Class 2015-17 graduated 2017, now in 2026).
That said, the IIM brand carries weight in north India BFSI and consulting markets independent of individual alumni network density. An IIM Amritsar grad applying for a Finance role at ICICI Bank or Deloitte India gets a resume screen because of the IIM tag, not because of a 20-year alumni network.
Named alumni: placement committee leadership (Class 23-25)
The placement report lists Placements Committee leadership and student coordinators rather than "where are they now" alumni profiles.
Placements Co-Chairs:
- ▸Prof. Sakshi Aggarwal (placement.chair@iimamritsar.ac.in)
- ▸Dr. Swapan Deep Arora (placement.chair@iimamritsar.ac.in)
GM, Corporate Relations:
- ▸Sanjay Kumar Tripathi (gm.cr@iimamritsar.ac.in)
Student Coordinators (Class 23-25): Ankita Ghosh, Gargi Andhale, Gyan Chandra Tiwari, Harpuneet Kaur, Kritika Thakur, Muskan Sharma, Nishita Charde, Rishika Bishnoi, Soumya Chatterjee, Tanish Singh.
As cohorts mature (the 2015-17 first batch is now ~10 years post-MBA), named alumni-in-senior-roles will populate organically. For now, the alumni network is a work-in-progress, not a mature asset.
The honest cons
Three weaknesses are worth being explicit about, in order of importance for most applicants.
1. Only top-20% stats published, full-batch median is unknown
The ₹19.11 L average and ₹18 L median reflect Top 20% only (roughly top 50–60 students). The placement report does not publish overall batch average or median CTC.
This is a transparency gap. If you fall in the top 20%, the ₹19.11 L average is your expected band. If you fall in the middle 50%, your outcome is structurally unknown from public data.
The V.V. Bhalla & Co. audit certificate is honest about this: it certifies only the numbers the school chose to publish. It does not certify that the school disclosed all material placement data.
For comparison: IIM Indore and IIM Kozhikode publish full-batch median and average. IIM Amritsar's selective disclosure is below tier-1 IIM transparency standards.
2. 31% of placements verified via unsigned letters, audit caveat is material
The V.V. Bhalla & Co. audit certificate explicitly notes: "79 of 258 students were assessed via job descriptions / unsigned offer letters / Institute undertaking (not signed offer letters)".
That is 31% of placements. The auditor performed "inquiry, analysis and review but did NOT carry out independent due diligence".
This does not mean the placements are fake. It means the auditor could not independently verify signed offer letters for nearly one-third of the batch. The school chose to publish this caveat rather than bury it, that is honesty most Indian B-schools don't practice.
But it is a material weakness in the audit scope. For a prospective applicant, it means treating the 96.63% rate as credible but not bulletproof.
3. 83% Male / 17% Female cohort is heavily skewed
Class 2023-25: 83% Male, 17% Female. Class 2022-24: 75% Male, 25% Female.
The gender ratio worsened from Class 22-24 to Class 23-25. This is the opposite direction of most Indian B-schools, which are slowly improving gender diversity.
For female applicants, this matters: a heavily male-skewed cohort changes classroom dynamics, group project team composition, and campus social environment. IIM Amritsar's gender diversity is below baby IIM median (most baby IIMs are 25–30% female).
IIM Amritsar vs the real alternatives
vs IIM Indore / Kozhikode / Lucknow
At 97+ percentile CAT, the older IIMs (Indore, Kozhikode, Lucknow) win on brand, median outcome, network depth, and PGP rigour. The decision is straightforward.
IIM Indore (fees ₹23–25 L) has a median outcome around ₹22–24 LPA and a highest CTC of ₹39+ LPA. IIM Kozhikode (fees ₹19–21 L) has similar outcomes. IIM Lucknow (fees ₹14–16 L) is the cheapest of the three and still beats IIM Amritsar on median outcome.
If you're competitive for those schools, go there. The brand premium is worth the higher fees (or in Lucknow's case, lower fees + better outcome).
At 88–94 percentile, where the older IIMs are not realistic and IIM Amritsar is, the school is a strong destination. The ₹21.50 L fees + 96.63% audit-certified placement rate + 35% Finance domain share make it a defensible bet.
For a CAT score in the 88–94 band, also compare IIM Raipur and IIM Kashipur, which are peer-tier baby IIMs.
vs IIM Nagpur / Visakhapatnam / Bodh Gaya
Same baby IIM tier, similar fee structure (₹20–22 L), similar placement outcomes (₹15–19 L average bands). The decision should be driven by geographic preference (Amritsar vs Nagpur vs Vizag) and sector alignment (IIM Amritsar is Finance-heavy, others vary).
IIM Amritsar's 35% Finance domain share is the differentiator. If Finance is your target, Amritsar is the strongest baby IIM choice. If Marketing or Operations is your target, IIM Nagpur or Visakhapatnam may offer better fit.
vs MDI Gurgaon / SIBM Pune
MDI Gurgaon (fees ₹22–24 L, avg ₹22–24 LPA) beats IIM Amritsar on median outcome, brand strength, and FMCG placements. MDI has stronger HUL/P&G/Marico recruiting and a deeper north India alumni network.
Choose MDI if you're competitive for it (CAT 95+ percentile) and want consumer marketing or north India network depth.
SIBM Pune (fees ₹23–25 L, avg ₹18–20 LPA) is comparable to IIM Amritsar on outcome but stronger on FMCG, HR, and west India network. SIBM has a 40-year alumni base; IIM Amritsar has a 10-year base.
Choose SIBM for FMCG/HR careers. Choose IIM Amritsar for Finance/BFSI.
vs GLIM Chennai
GLIM Chennai (fees ₹22.50 L for PGDM, avg ₹15 LPA) and IIM Amritsar are peer-tier on fees and outcome but serve different geographies and sectors.
GLIM Chennai is stronger in south India BFSI (JP Morgan, BNY Mellon, MasterCard in Chennai GCCs) and analytics (Tiger Analytics, Incedo). It has AACSB + AMBA international accreditation but weaker brand recognition in north India.
IIM Amritsar has stronger north India brand (IIM tag carries weight in Delhi/Gurgaon/Chandigarh markets), stronger Big Four consulting recruiting (Deloitte, EY, KPMG, PwC all recruit consistently), and a 35% Finance domain share (vs GLIM's more diversified mix).
Choose GLIM Chennai if you're targeting south India BFSI/analytics careers and value international accreditation. Choose IIM Amritsar if you're targeting north India Finance/Consulting and value the IIM brand.
Side-by-side: pull IIM Amritsar against any of the schools above on the Collvera comparison tool and see the fees, placements, and cutoffs in one view.
Who should apply
You should seriously consider IIM Amritsar if:
- ▸Your CAT score is 88–94 percentile and your academic record is strong (Class 10/12/Bachelor's consistently 75%+).
- ▸Your target sector is BFSI (Finance, Banking, Risk Analytics), the 35% Finance domain share is the highest among baby IIMs.
- ▸You want Big Four consulting (Deloitte, EY, KPMG, PwC) access, all four recruit consistently.
- ▸You are a north India candidate (UP, Bihar, Punjab, Haryana, MP) who values geographic proximity and regional network density.
- ▸You want IIM brand at a reasonable fee point (₹21.50 L is cheaper than IIM Indore, comparable to IIM Kozhikode).
- ▸You are a fresher (60% of Class 23-25 were freshers) or have 12–36 months work-ex (40% of cohort).
Who should skip
IIM Amritsar is the wrong school if:
- ▸Your CAT is 97+ percentile. Target IIM Indore/Kozhikode/Lucknow instead. The median outcome is materially higher and the brand gap is real.
- ▸You want FMCG brand management at HUL, P&G, Marico, or ITC. Marketing/Sales absorbed only 15% of Class 22-24 placements. Choose MDI Gurgaon or SIBM Pune instead.
- ▸You need guaranteed full-batch median disclosure. IIM Amritsar publishes only top-20% stats; below-median outcome is structurally unknown.
- ▸You want a mature alumni network (20+ years deep). IIM Amritsar is only 10 years old; the CXO-level alumni density is thin.
- ▸You need daily access to a major corporate/startup hub. Amritsar is a tier-2 cultural city, not a business centre.
The verdict
IIM Amritsar in 2026 is a solidly-positioned baby IIM (15th IIM, 10 years old) with audit-certified placement reporting (rare among baby IIMs), strong BFSI + Big Four consulting recruiter base, and an affordable fee structure (₹21.50 L vs ₹25–29 L at some peer schools).
The headline transparency gap, only top-20% disclosed, not full-batch, is its weakest disclosure surface. The audit caveat (31% placements verified via unsigned letters) is a material weakness in verification scope.
Best treated as a strong tier-2 IIM where the ROI works particularly well for the top half of admits (Finance/Consulting cluster, ₹18–22 LPA outcomes). Below-median outcome is undisclosed but anecdotal feedback suggests ₹12–15 LPA IT services and BPO roles.
For candidates whose CAT score is 88–94 percentile, academic record is strong, and target sector is Finance or Consulting, IIM Amritsar delivers a credible MBA outcome at a fee point that beats most tier-2 schools. The IIM brand carries weight in north India markets independent of individual alumni network density.
For candidates competitive for IIM Indore/Kozhikode/Lucknow or targeting FMCG brand management, go elsewhere. The median outcome gap and the sector-fit gap are real.
The school's improvement trajectory (96.63% audit-certified placement rate, 35% Finance domain share, Big Four recruiting depth) is structurally driven by the IIM Act 2017 Institute of National Importance status and recruiter trust in the IIM system. That is a durable long-term signal for an applicant making a two-year bet on the institution.
