What are the CAT preparation strategies and profile evaluation tips from an IIM Lucknow 99.5+ percentile student?

An IIM Lucknow student with a 9/9/8 academic profile and 99.5+ CAT percentile shared comprehensive guidance on CAT preparation and MBA admissions — and the picture that emerges is both practical and nuanced.

On exam strategy, the advice is clear: in the final month, past year papers and sectional tests deliver more value than full-length mocks, simply because of time efficiency. Mental peace matters more than most aspirants acknowledge. The day before the exam, this student avoided studying entirely — opting instead for comedy videos and adequate sleep. During the exam itself, beginning with strength areas (RCs in VARC, Arithmetic and Geometry in QA) helped build early confidence before moving into harder territory. For mock analysis, we've consistently seen this recommendation validated: 2–3 hours of detailed review is sufficient per mock, with focused attention on two things — solution approaches that differ from your own, and questions you solved slowly despite getting them right.

On profile evaluation, academic scores carry real weight. From what we've tracked across student conversations, candidates with 6s or 7s in their profile need to compensate with strong CAT scores — typically 99.6 to 99.7 percentile or above — particularly if they're freshers. That said, IIM Lucknow does contextualize academic scores by board and stream. A 7 in certain state boards may actually represent near-topper performance within that cohort, and the institute accounts for this. Work experience meaningfully shifts the equation: students with 2+ years of relevant experience have better conversion chances than freshers with identical GPAs.

On placement outcomes, the perspective shared is consistent with what we've seen across alumni conversations more broadly. SIP (Summer Internship Placement) outcomes depend heavily on pre-MBA profile. Marketing roles strongly prefer freshers, while Product Management roles favor candidates with relevant prior work experience. MBB consulting firms are specifically looking for 'spikes' — exceptional achievements such as patents, national-level sports recognition, or fast-track promotions — rather than strong academics alone. The batch in question saw improved Finance and Marketing placements compared to the previous year.

For students with lower academic profiles — say, a 7/6/8 combination — the honest recommendation is this: either target Tier-2 institutions like FMS rather than top IIMs, or use 1–2 years of meaningful work experience to strengthen the overall profile before attempting CAT again. In our experience, this is often better strategy than chasing a high percentile alone.
