Is leaving IIM Trichy for IIFT Kolkata worth it despite losing 3.5 lakhs in fees?

For a GEM candidate with a 97.47 CAT percentile and 28 months of work experience, leaving IIM Trichy after one month to join IIFT Kolkata — forfeiting ₹3.5 lakhs in non-refundable first-trimester fees — is a decision that deserves careful unpacking rather than a quick verdict.

The case for making this move rests on four specific arguments, and we think each one holds real weight worth examining.

On brand and compensation: IIFT carries stronger recruiter recognition than newer IIMs in certain hiring corridors, particularly in international trade, FMCG, and consulting-adjacent roles. From what we've tracked, IIFT Kolkata graduates have historically commanded higher compensation for comparable roles relative to IIM Trichy, with median packages north of ₹20 lakhs and averages around ₹23 lakhs for IIFT Kolkata — though it's important to note that some students in the batch did remain unplaced, which any honest evaluation must factor in.

On placement infrastructure: IIFT Kolkata benefits from access to both campus-specific and umbrella-wide corporate case competitions, which meaningfully expands placement touchpoints. The alumni network is also significantly larger than what newer IIMs can currently offer — and in our experience, that network depth has a compounding effect on lateral opportunities and day-zero recruiter familiarity.

On peer cohort quality: The IIFT Kolkata batch consistently features multiple 99+ percentilers, with nearly the entire cohort at 97 percentile and above. For many candidates, the quality of peer learning and the calibre of classroom discussion matters as much as campus aesthetics — and this is a genuine differentiator.

That said, we've seen experienced professionals raise counterpoints that are worth sitting with.

The consulting angle is a real limitation. IIFT Kolkata does not command the same visibility as MBB-recruiting programmes, and if tier-1 consulting is the goal, this matters more than average package numbers suggest. Campus infrastructure — no air-conditioning in hostels, a smaller physical footprint — is a genuine quality-of-life trade-off, and the consensus from those who've experienced both environments tends to be that IIM Trichy would have offered a superior campus life. The alumna who made this switch acknowledged as much directly, noting that batch size (190 students) and peer friendships compensated for what the campus lacked.

The most structurally significant concern, in our view, is the future of pooled placements. Currently, IIFT Kolkata benefits from placement pooling with IIFT Delhi — but once separate admissions proceed under INI status, IIFT Kolkata may lose access to Delhi's placement advantages. That's a change worth modelling into any long-term calculation, not just the current placement data.

Two practical points worth flagging for anyone in a similar situation: loan transfers require a fresh application process — you cannot simply transfer an existing education loan. And under UGC guidelines, full refunds are only permissible if you withdraw within one month of making payment. The ₹3.5 lakh loss here was unavoidable given the timing.

We've also seen this perspective raised in student conversations — that a post like this reads as promotional. We think the most useful frame is to treat it as a placement-focused, single-data-point account with genuine blind spots around consulting, infrastructure, and the INI transition risk. It isn't a complete picture, but the numbers and reasoning it offers are specific enough to be worth engaging with seriously.

The honest answer is: if your target roles align with IIFT's recruiter base, if you prioritise peer cohort quality and alumni depth over campus experience, and if you're not banking on consulting or on Delhi's placement pool remaining intact indefinitely — the switch likely holds. If any of those conditions don't apply, the ₹3.5 lakh sunk cost should not be the deciding factor either way.
