Should I choose IIM Ahmedabad or ISB for an MBA if my goal is VC/PE networking and business funding rather than campus placements?

freshernegativeVC/PE networkingplacement statisticsconsulting vs finance recruiting

For a young entrepreneur focused on VC/PE networking and business funding rather than conventional placements, this is one of the more nuanced school-choice questions we encounter — and the picture that emerges from experienced professionals is notably different from the assumption many aspirants start with.

The weight of informed opinion leans toward IIM Ahmedabad over ISB for this specific goal, and the reasoning is more concrete than simple prestige arguments.

On VC/PE access specifically, professionals with finance industry exposure make a pointed distinction: IIMA has stronger, more established presence in VC/PE than ISB. ISB may hold advantages in consulting recruitment, but — as we've heard put directly — "IIMA has more skin in the game on VC/PE grounds." IIMA functions as a regular recruiter destination for PE, VC, and IB roles. ISB, by contrast, draws more heavily from the startup ecosystem, which is a different network than institutional capital. These are not equivalent pipelines.

On placement data, there are legitimate concerns worth examining carefully. We've tracked specific figures cited by finance professionals regarding ISB's flagship 1-year program: approximately 80 students unplaced in a recent batch despite relatively stronger market conditions elsewhere, salary ranges of 12–24 LPA reported, and an absence of transparent placement audits with published median or mean figures. IIMA, by comparison, dominates across finance, consulting, marketing, and general management with more auditable outcomes. The ISB YLP program is also comparatively newer as a track, and professionals consistently note that the two programs are not comparable when it comes to financial services recruitment specifically.

A more fundamental challenge worth sitting with: experienced voices — including those with ex-Warburg Pincus-level exposure — make the case that school selection matters less than existing operational networks and demonstrated business experience when it comes to actual fundraising outcomes. For a second-generation entrepreneur with active business context, that existing network may be the real competitive asset, and the MBA's job is to amplify it rather than replace it.

One dissenting but thoughtful perspective is worth including: for an aspirant at 21 with clear entrepreneurial goals, Executive Education programs — intensive MDPs that allow faster network testing — may deliver more targeted value than committing to a 1–2 year full program. This won't suit everyone, but it reflects a genuine school-of-thought that full-time programs optimize for placement outcomes, not necessarily for the kind of UHNI and institutional capital networking that business-scaling goals require.

In our experience, the consensus for someone specifically targeting VC/PE access, luxury business scaling, and UHNI relationships is IIMA — on the basis of demonstrable recruiter presence and alumni depth in those sectors. But we'd also stress what experienced professionals consistently reinforce: post-MBA outcomes in funding and network-building depend heavily on execution, timing, and the strength of the operating story you bring into those rooms. The institution opens doors; what you do at the threshold is still yours to own.
