What is it like to attend IIM Kozhikode? Placements, culture, academics, and program differences explained by a 2025 graduate

mixedpositiveplacementsSIP shortlistsacademics impact

A 2025 graduate from IIM Kozhikode recently shared a detailed breakdown of life across the institute's three programs — PGP, PGP-ABM, and LSM — covering everything from admissions to placements to campus culture. Here's what the picture looks like when you put it all together.

On Placements

IIM K runs a batch of 600+ students across its three programs, and overall placement outcomes are described as decent. That said, there's an important internal distinction worth understanding: Summer Internship Placements (SIPs) and final placements do not follow the same logic.

From what we've tracked, academics weigh heavily on SIP shortlists. A CGPA below 7 creates real friction in SIP recruitment — this came through clearly and consistently. Final placements, however, are more forgiving, with conversion depending far more on interview performance and fit than on your GPA alone. So the honest framing is: protect your CGPA in the first year if SIP quality matters to you, but don't assume a rough first year ends your placement story.

Finance roles are described as "abundant" at IIM K — including PEVC and IB positions — which is notable for a campus outside the traditional metro circuit. However, finance conversions for LSM students specifically are rare, so program choice genuinely shapes your domain access here.

On the LSM cohort: female LSM students generally secured placements more smoothly, particularly in consulting and marketing roles. Male LSM students reported more difficulty during SIPs but largely converted well in final placements. In our experience, this kind of program-specific texture rarely makes it into official brochures, so it's worth factoring in.

On Academics and Their Real Weight

For freshers specifically, SIP shortlists come down to three things: academics, diversity, and college brand name. Work experience helps offset weaker academics to some degree, but it doesn't eliminate the disadvantage. The characterisation shared was direct — "SIPs are random" — meaning even strong profiles can face uncertainty. Preparation and realistic expectations matter equally here.

On Program Selection and the Admissions Process

All three programs — PGP, PGP-ABM, and LSM — conduct separate interviews, typically held around 10 days apart and conducted offline. Each program issues its own independent shortlist, so you're effectively navigating three distinct processes.

One practical note that we've seen resonate with applicants: the Stage-1 form answers are reviewed by professors but are rarely discussed in interviews themselves. Copy-pasting identical responses across program applications is considered acceptable. That said, the substance of your answers still matters for the shortlisting stage, so don't treat them as throwaway fields.

Interview prep should include familiarity with Kerala's political landscape and your home state — at least one PI conversation has reportedly centred on global happiness indices, which signals the kind of breadth IIM K interviewers appreciate.

On Campus Culture

The campus draws genuinely sharp people, and the intellectual environment reflects that. One aspect flagged honestly is the existence of "placecom ragging" — a cultural element that experienced professionals who've been through the process have noted as something incoming students should be aware of, rather than something to be surprised by mid-campus.

A Note on Prediction Tools

We'd echo the caution shared here directly: don't over-rely on prediction tools like Vercel for estimating your chances. Cutoffs and composition shift every cycle, and "every year is different" is not a hedge — it's an accurate description of how IIM K's intake has moved historically. Use predictions as rough orientation, not as decisions.

The Core Takeaway

CGPA matters — but its impact is front-loaded into the SIP cycle, not evenly distributed across your two years. If you enter IIM K with weaker academics or take an early GPA hit, your final placement outcome is still very much in play. The institute's finance depth is a genuine differentiator, and program choice (PGP vs. LSM especially) has real downstream consequences for which roles and sectors you can realistically target.
