What is it like to attend ISB and work at McKinsey, Bain, or Boston Consulting Group after graduation?

2-5 yrsmixedMBB placementssalary progressioncareer transitions

Here's what life at ISB looks like — and what follows at MBB — based on perspectives we've gathered from alumni who've walked this path.

On salary progression, the picture is fairly consistent: MBB typically pays in the range of 30 / 40 / 50 / 60 / 90 LPA year-on-year at base salary, assuming timely promotions. Initial consulting CTC post-MBA tends to land around 40 LPA, growing to 50+ within a few years depending on role and performance. These aren't aspirational numbers — they reflect what we've tracked from professionals who've been through the ISB-to-MBB pipeline directly.

On the question of AI disrupting consulting: the view from experienced professionals in this space is measured but clear. The core value that MBB sells — trust, context, and facilitating organizational change — remains deeply human-centric. That's the working assumption, and we think it holds up under scrutiny.

The work hours, however, are not romanticized by anyone who's been through it. Expect 12+ hours daily as a baseline, plus commute. That's the reality of early consulting life, and it's worth going in clear-eyed.

On ISB's value in the Indian market

In our experience, one of the most honest things you can say about ISB is this: it doesn't carry a special premium over IIM-A or BLACKI in the Indian ecosystem broadly. But it opens doors that are otherwise genuinely closed — particularly MBB shortlists. The network and personal connection density at Indian B-schools is something that foreign MBA programs simply don't replicate for people building careers in India. ISB makes sense primarily for those planning to stay here; a foreign MBA is worth considering only if you're committed to settling abroad.

On breaking into MBB from ISB

Non-consulting backgrounds can absolutely transition into MBB through the campus route — many people hired directly from campus have no prior consulting experience. That said, not all backgrounds are weighted equally by recruiters. IB, Big 4 consulting, MBB backend roles, PE/VC, and social impact work tend to rank higher on MBB recruiter preference lists. Software engineering backgrounds, by contrast, don't particularly strengthen an MBB application.

For lateral entry into MBB post-ISB — it's possible, but rare and difficult. We've seen it happen as early as one year post-graduation, but anyone banking on that path should go in knowing the odds are low.

On MBA ROI

The financial returns from ISB are not immediate. Over a 20-year horizon, the investment becomes meaningful — but that framing matters. Beyond 80–90 LPA, the optimization shifts away from pure salary toward role satisfaction and career trajectory. That's worth sitting with before you commit.

A perspective worth acknowledging: there's a legitimate counter-argument that software engineers can reach similar non-monetary optimization without absorbing 30–40 LPA in fees. It's not a fringe view — it's a real ROI question that deserves honest engagement, especially for strong engineers already on a good trajectory.

On admissions

ISB admissions reward clarity. Essay quality, communication skills, and a well-articulated long-term goal matter significantly. The interview tends to probe hard on 'why MBA' and how the degree fits your specific career trajectory — vague answers don't hold up in that room. Academically, coursework difficulty varies by background, with advanced stats, operations research (linear programming), and finance posing the steepest challenges for many.

The overall picture: ISB-to-MBB is a legitimate, well-worn path — but it rewards preparation, honest self-assessment, and a clear sense of what you're optimizing for beyond the first offer letter.
