Is an MBA worth the hectic lifestyle? Reality check from FORE alumni earning 35 LPA

mixedmixedwork-life balancesalary vs. lifestylegovernment jobs vs. corporate

The tension this question captures is one we encounter constantly in student conversations: does a high salary actually justify what the lifestyle demands? Here's the situation that prompted it — a FORE (Faculty of Management Studies) alumnus's wife, encountered on a train, cautioned that her husband's 35 LPA corporate role, despite the financial success, involved exhausting hours and stress she genuinely felt a 12 LPA government job would not. Her suggestion: pursue government employment instead.

It's a perspective worth taking seriously — but also worth interrogating.

Several experienced professionals we've heard from push back on this kind of advice with a point rooted in basic human psychology: people tend to advocate for the path they didn't take. YouTubers from IITs often say degrees don't matter; those earning 35 LPA sometimes suggest lower-paying alternatives. That doesn't make the advice wrong, but it does mean you should weigh the source carefully. From what we've tracked in alumni conversations, those who've worked both in government and in post-MBA corporate roles describe government employment as offering real security — but also slower promotions, toxic internal environments in certain departments, and increasing pressure to compete with private sector benchmarks. The grass-is-greener effect runs in both directions.

One important clarification that often gets lost: overwork is not exclusive to high-paying roles. Professionals earning 3–4 LPA face intense workloads too. The difference is that compensation in corporate roles is designed to match effort — imperfectly, but more explicitly than in government structures.

The binary comparison — MBA corporate life versus government job — is also somewhat false. In our experience, the MBA career landscape is not monolithic. Consulting and investment banking roles can genuinely involve 70–80 hour weeks. Many other post-MBA roles operate at 50–60 hours. Students who go in with clarity about which sectors and roles they're targeting can meaningfully shape their work-life equation. The lifestyle varies enormously depending on the path you build within the MBA ecosystem.

There's a legitimate case for government jobs, and we don't dismiss it. For married professionals prioritizing family time, geographic stability, and long-term predictability, the trade-off can make sense. But that case needs to be made honestly — securing a government position requires intense competition in its own right, transfers can significantly disrupt stability, and certain departments carry their own forms of pressure and institutional friction that don't disappear just because the salary is lower.

One question that surfaced in this conversation is also worth flagging for those doing the math: if the FORE alumnus graduated around 2009 and is at 35 LPA after roughly 15 years, is that strong performance? Some experienced engineers without MBAs reach 50–70 LPA through senior tech roles in that same timeframe. It's not a universal benchmark, but it's a fair data point to factor into your expectations.

The picture that emerges is this: what was framed as a "reality check" was really one couple's perspective, shaped by their specific life stage and preferences. That perspective has value — but it isn't a verdict. The actual decision depends on what you're optimizing for: income maximization, job security, work-life balance, or geographic flexibility. We've seen all of these lead to genuinely satisfying outcomes for different people. No single path suits everyone, and the honest advisor's job is to help you figure out which priorities are actually yours — not hand you someone else's conclusion.
