What is it really like to be a MICA student? Admissions, placements, fees, and career outcomes

mixedmixedadmissions criteriaMICAT preparationfees and ROI

A current PGDM-C student at MICA shared candid, ground-level insights into what the institution is actually like — and the picture that emerges is nuanced enough to be worth unpacking carefully.

On admissions: There are no sectional cutoffs for CAT or XAT, and the batch itself reflects this — members range from 80 percentile to 99.7 percentile. MICAT scores vary just as widely; we've seen students who scored as low as 8–10 still convert their calls, while others with 15–20+ scores also received interview opportunities. What stands out consistently is the descriptive section — it's described by those inside the process as a genuine "deal breaker or maker," carrying significant weight beyond the scored components. This year's MICAT was reportedly "much easier" than previous editions, which suggests cutoffs may increase by approximately 5 marks. That said, in our experience tracking MICA's selection patterns, unpredictability is a defining feature of this process — don't treat any benchmark as a guarantee.

On fees: The total cost sits at approximately ₹28 lakhs for two years (roughly ₹13 lakhs in year one), which the student themselves acknowledged is "steep" from an ROI standpoint. Whether it makes financial sense depends heavily on your situation — age and remaining earning years matter here. A 22-year-old fresher and a 27-year-old professional are not making the same calculation. From what we've tracked across student conversations, the question of whether MICA justifies its fees against Tier-1 IIMs is a recurring one, and the honest answer is: it depends on your goal. For candidates firmly committed to a marketing career and who may not convert a Tier-1 IIM offer, MICA functions as a strong, legitimate option rather than a consolation.

On placements: For freshers specifically, options are more limited compared to candidates with prior work experience — this is a consistent pattern we've seen, not an isolated observation. The student in question secured a good SIP and was optimistic about a PPO. Academic credentials from 10th and 12th do factor in to some degree, but MICAT scores themselves don't play a major role in placement outcomes. The roles on offer span marketing, analytics, corporate communications, product management, and branding. Tech roles exist but are not a strength of the placement profile. From perspectives shared by MICA alumni with two or more years of work experience, the placement outcomes tend to be noticeably better for non-freshers — something worth weighing if you're considering the programme straight out of graduation.

One clarification worth noting: PGDM and PGDM-C curricula are 80% similar in year one, and umbrella placements mean both programmes have equal access to the same opportunities. The distinction between the two is often overstated in early conversations.

On campus life and other considerations: MICA's own social media presence is limited, which means the on-ground experience is less visible than it might be for other schools — something aspirants often underestimate when forming impressions. On work gaps, a gap of up to three years is manageable if you can articulate it clearly in interviews.

The picture that emerges overall: MICA is a viable and well-suited option for candidates in the 80+ percentile CAT range, particularly those with a genuine commitment to marketing as a career direction. But it requires honest financial planning and realistic ROI expectations going in — not after the offer letter arrives.
