On CAT preparation and mock performance

Mock scores and actual CAT performance don't correlate as cleanly as most aspirants assume. Temperament and exam-day execution matter more than what your practice tests show. This particular student scored 95+ consistently in mocks but achieved 99+ on the actual exam — on the third attempt. For the final two months before CAT, the advice we've consistently seen validated is this — stop learning new concepts and focus entirely on shoring up weak areas. If you're in this category, build your profile aggressively before applying — PORs, certifications, and demonstrable domain experience all move the needle at SPJIMR more than they do at traditional IIMs.

From experienced professionals and current students we've spoken with, finance cohorts at SPJIMR heavily favour candidates with prior finance work experience or certifications like CFA or FRM — though exceptions do exist. If you're pivoting into finance without this background, be prepared to make a very deliberate case.

On placements — and why specialization choice is everything

SPJIMR's placement strength is not uniform across specializations, and this is perhaps the most important thing an applicant needs to understand before choosing this school.

Marketing placements are widely regarded as arguably stronger than several ABC IIMs, with robust FMCG company recruitment and a well-established brand in that space.

HR placements are a different story entirely. To put it plainly: HR placements at SPJIMR are nearly non-existent. If HR is your target function, XLRI, SCMHRD, TISS, and MDI are the schools that will actually serve that goal. Choosing SPJIMR for HR is a misalignment of school strength and career objective that we'd caution against.
