What is student life really like at TAPMI? Housing, food, safety, placements, and insider tips from current MBA students
Life at TAPMI's Manipal campus is best described as "a mix of hectic schedule and fun" — and from what we've tracked across student conversations, that framing holds up pretty consistently.
Housing and Campus Living
First-year boys are housed in small air-conditioned double-occupancy rooms; girls get comparatively larger rooms, with limited single-room options becoming available in the second year. Rooms are cleaned by staff every two days. Hostel costs work out to approximately ₹1.65L annually for boys and ₹1.85L for girls, with a mandatory mess fee of ₹75,000–80,000 on top of that — worth factoring into your overall cost-of-attendance math before you finalise the program.
Food
The mess is operated by ITC Hotels, which consistently earns positive marks for quality and hygiene. The predictable caveat: repetitive menus can wear on you over time. Vegetarian and Jain options are available, and the kitchen puts out special meals during festivals, which students genuinely appreciate.
Location and Getting Around
The campus sits roughly 5km from Manipal's city centre. For cafes, restaurants, and general errands, you'll need to head out — autos, buses, and rented two-wheelers are the standard options. The beaches at Malpe and Kaup are 15–20km away and make for a worthwhile weekend escape. It's a contained campus life by design, which some students love and others find limiting — we've seen both perspectives surface regularly.
Safety and Curfew
Safety on campus is generally considered good. First-years have a 10:30pm curfew; second-years get a slightly extended 11:30pm curfew. Within campus grounds, movement is essentially free. For a 26-year-old or older student used to metro-city independence, the structure takes some adjustment, but it's not reported as a significant concern.
Academics
The first term is genuinely demanding — heavy assignments, group projects, frequent quizzes, case studies, and graded class participation all hit simultaneously. In our experience tracking student feedback from newer batches, this initial intensity catches a lot of people off guard. That said, committees and regular campus events provide meaningful balance, and most students find their footing by the second term. One contextual note worth flagging: approximately 50% of the batch is North Indian, so regional adjustment tends to be less of an issue than it might be at some other south-campus schools.
Breaks and Internships
Diwali brings a 10-day break, and festival celebrations happen on campus. Summer breaks are tied to internship schedules, with companies typically providing 15-day buffers. All internships are paid — a minimum stipend of ₹8,000 per month has been reported, with rare exceptions.
Placements
Audited placement reports align with what's published on the website — the numbers aren't inflated, which is more than can be said for every institution in this tier. That said, it's important to go in clear-eyed about the composition of offers. In marketing, upwards of 80% of roles involve sales profiles; product management and category management positions do exist but are not the majority. Finance placements are broadly comparable to tier-2 peers like GIM and IMT. If finance is your primary goal, the BKFS (Banking and Financial Services) program is the more purposeful route — we've seen this recommendation come through consistently from alumni perspectives.
A Few Insider Notes
Documents are uploaded digitally during the admission process but are verified physically once you're on campus — keep your originals organised and accessible. One strong caution from TAPMI 2027 batch alumni perspectives: think carefully before choosing the International Business program. Those students are housed 5km off the main campus with daily shuttle commutes, which meaningfully affects access to campus life, peer networks, and the overall TAPMI experience. For most candidates, the Core MBA or BKFS programs are the stronger choices.
