Are interview skills more important than CAT percentile at IIM selections?
The short answer is: CAT is the gatekeeper, interview is the converter. They operate at different stages, so comparing them directly misses the point. You cannot interview your way into an IIM shortlist with a weak CAT score, and you cannot coast into a seat with a strong CAT score and a poor interview.
How the two stages actually work
The IIM selection process has two distinct phases where different factors dominate.
At the shortlisting stage, CAT percentile carries the bulk of the weight, approximately 35-45% of the shortlist composite, alongside academic scores (10th, 12th, graduation), work experience points, and diversity markers.
IIM A and B apply an academic-diversity weighting that rewards non-engineering UG streams.
IIM C historically weights CAT and academic scores more heavily. Sectional percentiles also matter independently - a strong overall score with a weak sectional can disqualify you from IIM ABC shortlists even if your headline percentile looks fine.
At the final selection stage, the interview and WAT together contribute approximately 30-35% of the final merit composite. At this stage, the CAT score is largely a background variable. The panel is evaluating the person in front of them.
The implication is simple: a 99+ CAT candidate with poor interview performance will fail at final selection. A 95 percentile candidate with exceptional interview skills will often not reach the interview at all.

- Handling of stress questions and unknown territory - graceful acknowledgment beats a bluffed answer every time
The counterintuitive converter pattern
A consistent pattern across recent batches is that candidates with relatively lower CAT scores who reach the interview stage convert at higher rates than expected. The likely reason is focus - knowing the interview is their primary lever, they invest heavily in mock interviews, current affairs preparation, and story-building.
They arrive practiced.
By contrast, high-CAT candidates often over-prepare content (facts, frameworks, domain knowledge) but under-prepare on the human dimensions - confidence under pressure, authentic storytelling, avoiding robotic delivery of memorised answers. Nerves, over-scripted responses, and rigid communication are the most common reasons strong-CAT candidates fail at the interview stage.
This is not an argument for targeting a lower CAT score. It is an argument for taking interview preparation as seriously as quantitative prep.
Preparation reality check
CAT preparation realistically requires 400-600 hours over 6-8 months. Interview preparation requires roughly 100-200 hours over 2-3 months, but those hours have to include live practice - mock interviews with honest feedback, not solo preparation.
Both are skills developed through deliberate repetition, not innate talent.

Winning candidates tend to demonstrate balance across all three dimensions
