Do old IIMs versus new IIMs make material difference for fresher placements?
Yes, the gap is real and material, not just a prestige perception issue.
Salary Gap
Using 2024-batch verified numbers, the difference is significant
| School | Avg Package (2024 batch) |
|---|---|
| IIM Ahmedabad | ~Rs 35.2 LPA |
| IIM Bangalore | ~Rs 34.9 LPA |
| IIM Calcutta | ~Rs 34.2 LPA |
| IIM Lucknow | ~Rs 32 LPA |
| IIM Kozhikode | ~Rs 30 LPA |
| IIM Indore | ~Rs 26 LPA |
New IIMs (Udaipur, Trichy, Rohtak, Raipur, Ranchi, Kashipur) do not have verified batch-level data in our canonical records, but student-reported and placement report estimates for recent batches typically fall in the Rs 15-18 LPA range on average - roughly half the IIM A/B/C median. The gap is not a rounding error.
Recruiter Access
This is where the structural difference is most stark. MBB (McKinsey, BCG, Bain) and bulge-bracket banks (Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley) concentrate their on-campus recruiting almost entirely at IIM A/B/C, with marginal representation at other old IIMs and near-zero presence at new IIMs.
Top tech PM roles at Google, Microsoft, and Amazon follow a similar pattern.
A common observation from recent batches is that new IIMs see occasional MBB or bulge-bracket hires - but these are exceptions, not a pipeline. The honest framing is that if consulting at MBB or IB at a bulge-bracket firm is a hard target, the recruiting infrastructure simply does not exist at new IIMs to make that outcome reliable.
Alumni Network Depth
IIM A was founded in 1961, IIM B in 1973, IIM C in 1961. That is 50+ years of alumni in senior decision-making roles across every major Indian and global company.
New IIMs, most founded post-2010, have alumni history of roughly 10-15 years, which means fewer senior alumni in positions to drive referrals or pull candidates into interview processes. This compounds over a career - it is not just a placement-year disadvantage.
Career Ceiling and Timeline
Students from recent old IIM batches report that the brand carries weight well past the first job - for lateral moves, international applications, and access to senior-level roles. New IIM graduates typically find the brand gap narrows over time as work experience accumulates, but for the first 5-10 years, the old IIM brand opens doors faster at premium firms.
The Tier Hierarchy Worth Using
- 01IIM A, B, C - clear separation for consulting, finance, and top tech
- 02IIM L, K, I (Lucknow, Kozhikode, Indore) - strong placement outcomes, still meaningfully below ABC
- 03New IIMs (Udaipur, Trichy, Rohtak, Ranchi, Kashipur, Raipur) - gaining recognition, but not yet at par
- 04Baby IIMs (Bodhgaya, Sirmaur, Jammu, Nagpur, Sambalpur, Vizag) - placement infrastructure still developing
- 05CAP (remaining IIMs placed through central process) - lowest placement outcomes in the IIM family
The Retake Question
If your current calls are limited to new or baby IIMs and your target is premium consulting, IB, or top tech PM, the CAT retake calculation is worth taking seriously.
The placement gap is structural, not something effort or networking can fully bridge from inside a new IIM. If your goals are more flexible - general management, mid-market companies, FMCG operations, or you have a specific geography or sector niche - new IIMs can still deliver solid outcomes and are not a dead end.
Compare old versus new IIM placement data or run an eligibility check for old IIM shortlists if you want to see where your profile currently sits.
