Do PoRs (Positions of Responsibility) matter for IIM admissions?
PoRs matter for IIM admissions, but not in the way most applicants assume. They carry zero direct weight in composite scores at IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, or IIM Calcutta, yet they can single-handedly rescue or sink a 30-minute interview panel.
Think of them as interview ammunition, not selection criteria.
How IIMs Actually Use PoRs
None of the top IIMs publish a PoR checklist or assign hard points for club leadership in their shortlisting formulas.
IIM Ahmedabad's AWT-PI round, IIM Bangalore's WAT-PI, and IIM Calcutta's GDPI all treat PoRs as profile context, not scoreable boxes. The shortlist is driven by CAT percentile, academics, and work experience.
But once you're in that room, PoRs become the raw material for almost every behavioral question a panel asks.
What Panels Are Actually Probing
A panel at IIM Ahmedabad doesn't ask about your PoR to verify your resume. They ask to understand how you think under pressure, how you handle people who don't report to you, and whether your leadership stories are specific or vague. "Tell me about a conflict you navigated as a team leader" is a standard probe, and a candidate with a genuine, sustained role answers it far more convincingly than one reading off a title. Two or three real stories are worth more than a resume full of committee memberships.
What Qualifies as a PoR
| Context | Examples |
|---|---|
| UG College | Student council, fest head, club president, NSS/NCC officer |
| School (10th-12th) | Head boy/girl, house captain, sports or debate team lead |
| Workplace | Team lead, tech lead, project manager, mentorship coordinator |
| Extra-curricular | NGO chapter founder, hackathon organizer, student initiative lead |
Any role where you organized people, managed a real constraint, or resolved a genuine conflict qualifies. A title without a story does not.
Quality Destroys Quantity Here
One deep, sustained PoR is more interview-worthy than five superficial memberships. Panels at IIM Calcutta and IIM Bangalore are known to probe hard on impact: what changed, what broke, what you'd do differently.
A candidate who organized a 3,000-person cultural festival, managed a team of 40 volunteers, and handled a last-minute budget cut has a richer answer than someone who lists eight club names. Don't pad.
Go deep on what you actually did.
If You Have No Traditional PoRs
This is a gap worth addressing honestly, not hiding. Workex candidates can substitute with strong project ownership narratives: cross-functional team leadership, client-facing accountability at firms like TCS, Deloitte, or Goldman Sachs, or mentoring junior analysts.
Freshers can lean on internship leadership, academic committee roles, or documented personal initiatives like founding a study group or running a community drive. The bar is real experience with a real outcome, not a formal title.
The Honest Takeaway
No PoR will get you shortlisted, and a missing PoR won't get you rejected outright. But walking into an IIM Ahmedabad or IIM Bangalore interview with zero leadership stories is a structural risk.
Panels fill silence with harder questions, and "I never really led anything" is a difficult position to recover from. If you're still in college, take one role seriously.
If you're working, find a cross-functional project to own before your interview cycle.
Pro Tip: Before your PI, write out three PoR stories using the STAR format (Situation, Task, Action, Result) and rehearse the "what broke and how you fixed it" version of each, because that is the follow-up every IIM panel asks.
