Does 1 year work ex hurt or help CAT admissions for a 95/87/76 CS graduate?
One year of work experience sits in an awkward middle ground for CAT admissions. It's not a disqualifier, but it's also not the asset that 24-36 months would be, and that distinction matters more at IIM A/B/C than at IIM L/K/I.
How work experience is weighted at the shortlist stage
Most IIMs apply a work-ex scoring curve in their shortlist matrix. The broad pattern, based on publicly observable shortlist outcomes across batches, is:
- 0-11 months: minimal credit, close to zero
- 12 months: partial credit, roughly half of peak
- 24-36 months: peak credit range
- 48+ months: credit starts declining slightly
Twelve months lands you solidly below the peak. The exact point values IIMs assign are not publicly published in a single unified rubric, so treat the curve as directional rather than precise arithmetic.
Where your academic profile stands
A 95/87/76 CS graduate has a moderate academic stack. Strong 10th marks, decent 12th, and a weaker graduation percentage.
IIM shortlist matrices weight all three, and the graduation score of 76% is below the 80%+ band where full academic-component credit typically kicks in. Engineering + CS also attracts a mild penalty at IIM A/B/C because the non-engineering diversity bonus goes to other streams.
So the academic component of your composite is competitive but not dominant.
The PI problem at 12 months
This is the real issue, not just the composite score.
IIM A/B/C interview panels probe for project ownership, cross-functional impact, and moments of leadership or decision-making under ambiguity. At 12 months, most CS professionals are still individual contributors.
Students who reach PI at this stage often report getting stuck on questions like "describe a time you influenced outcomes beyond your immediate role" because those opportunities genuinely haven't arrived yet. You can prepare strong answers, but the material is thin.
At IIM L/K/I, PI panels are slightly less aggressive on this dimension, which is partly why this profile maps more naturally to that tier.

IIM L is the most attainable strong outcome here, assuming CAT performance hits 97-98+. IIM A/B/C shortlists are possible at 99+ but the composite disadvantage from below-peak work ex plus the graduation score makes conversion to offer harder.
The wait-vs-apply tradeoff
Waiting 12 more months builds you to 24 months, which moves you into the peak work-ex credit range and gives you more PI material. That is a real benefit at IIM A/B/C.
But each year of delay has an opportunity cost in foregone post-MBA earnings, and a guaranteed IIM L outcome this year may well outperform a speculative IIM A outcome next year. There is no universally correct answer here.
It depends on how serious your CAT prep is, whether you genuinely want A/B/C or would be satisfied at L/K/I, and how much your current role will mature in the next 12 months.
If you are already targeting 99+ and your prep reflects that, applying this year for IIM L/K/I is a rational call. If 99 feels uncertain and IIM A/B/C is the actual goal, the extra year of work ex closes a real gap.
