Does the IIM selection system penalize genuinely hardworking general candidates?
The IIM system does not penalize hard work, but it does set a mathematically steeper climb for General-category engineers (GEM). That is structural reality, not punishment. A GEM candidate at IIM Ahmedabad needs 99.5+ percentile to be safe; a non-engineering female from the same category may clear shortlist at 98.5. The exam is identical. The bar is not.
Why the Math Is Harder for GEM Candidates
CAT draws roughly 3 lakh serious test-takers annually. The General category holds 70%+ of applicants, and engineers dominate that pool.
The result: roughly 2,000-3,000 candidates score 99+ in the GEM bucket, competing for approximately 300-400 GEM seats across IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta combined. That is 1-in-7 odds at best, before PI and WAT filter further.

- Academics: Sub-80% in 10th or 12th is a lasting drag on composite scores at most IIMs.
- Work experience: Tier 1 firms (consulting, banking, FMCG) at 24-36 months add meaningful profile weight. Six-figure IT support roles at generic MNCs do not.
- WAT/PI: At the 99+ level, a large fraction of shortlisted candidates are similarly scored. PI execution separates converters from non-converters.
The forum comment "I converted at 97, so this was his incompetency" is blunt but contains a real signal: PI and profile consistency matter enormously at the margin. A 99.7 CAT score with a shaky PI loses to a 99.1 with a coherent story.
The Productive Framing
Bitterness about the OBC or SC candidate who converted at a lower percentile solves nothing. Their percentile threshold is lower, yes, but they still cleared the same CAT, the same WAT, and the same PI panel.
The spots reserved for categories were never in your pool to begin with, so the counterfactual is cleaner than it feels emotionally.
The honest version: this is hard, do not pretend otherwise. GEM is the most competitive bucket in Indian management admissions.
But candidates who clear IIM ABC as General candidates earned their seat outright, competing at the highest required cutoffs in the system. That is worth something.
