Does work experience compensate for a 90 percentile CAT score?

A 90 percentile CAT score cannot compensate for work experience at the top 6 IIMs. Full stop. But at newer IIMs and select tier-1.5 schools, 3+ years of strong workex can genuinely push a borderline candidate into the shortlist.

IIM Calcutta (fees ₹27L) sits in the same bracket. Work experience earns you points in their composite scoring, but only after you clear the percentile gate, which 90 doesn't open.

Where Workex Actually Moves the Needle

Both remain competitive, but neither runs a pure percentile cutoff the way old IIMs do.

Other Realistic Options at 90 Percentile

• MDI Gurgaon (CAT 95%+) is a stretch; retake seriously before applying.
• IIFT and NMIMS (NMAT-based) have softer gates and reward sector experience.
• ISB PGPpro targets mid-career professionals with 5+ years workex and no minimum GMAT/GRE cutoff, making it the strongest fallback if you have deep domain experience.

The Honest Takeaway

This is a narrow path, don't pretend otherwise.

The composite scoring advantage at IIM Shillong, Rohtak, and Ranchi is real but not guaranteed. A candidate with consulting, investment banking, or armed forces background at 90 percentile has a shot at those shortlists.

A generic IT role at 90 percentile does not.

XLRI and SPJIMR are worth attempting but require XAT scores that may themselves need improvement. If you have one more attempt in you, targeting 95+ percentile unlocks MDI, IIFT, and the top IIM waitlists, which is a qualitatively different outcome.
