IIM Ahmedabad weights work experience up to 36 months at roughly 4-5 points in its composite score, so adding 6-8 months between CAT registration and the DAF can move you up the merit list in a meaningful way.

Why the Gap Exists

CAT registration closes in early August, capturing your work experience at that point. Interviews happen 8-10 months later, in February or March.

That gap means many candidates accumulate 6-12 additional months of full-time experience by the time panels meet them. IIMs built the DAF precisely to capture this updated picture, so not filling it accurately leaves points on the table.

This matters most for two groups: candidates who had zero or minimal experience at CAT registration (say, one month of FTE), and candidates sitting just under a workex scoring threshold. If you joined your first role in July and registered for CAT in August, you had one month on record.

By February, you have seven or eight, which IIMs treat as substantively different.

How the Top Three IIMs Handle It

All three allow DAF updates before the WAT/PI stage. IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta also factor workex into their final selection scores, so the updated number feeds into more than just the panel's impression of you.

Documentation You Need

The Interview Consistency Rule

Whatever you enter in the DAF, your PI pitch must match it. If your DAF shows a role evolution from analyst to senior analyst, expect the panel to ask what changed.

Companies like Deloitte, Goldman Sachs, or HUL recruit heavily at these institutes, and panels often include alumni from such firms who can probe role depth quickly. Inconsistency between your DAF and your verbal answer is a red flag.

Never inflate months. Verification happens at the joining stage, and admission cancellation is a real outcome for discrepancies. This is a hard rule, not a soft caution.
