New IIMs (Kozhikode, Indore, Shillong, Udaipur, Rohtak) have grown their faculty bases, but adjunct and visiting professors still fill a disproportionate share of the timetable. Baby IIMs (Amritsar, Bodh Gaya, Sambalpur, Sirmaur, and others) often rely heavily on parent institution faculty on deputation.

The classroom experience is genuinely different.

Placements and the Recruiter Reality

IIM Bangalore and Calcutta are close behind, with McKinsey, BCG, Goldman Sachs, and Bain showing up as Day Zero recruiters. New IIMs like Indore post median figures in the ₹18-24 LPA range, with firms like HUL, Tata Steel, Morgan Stanley, and Deloitte anchoring placements.

Baby IIMs often report medians in the ₹10-14 LPA range, and their recruiter lists lean heavily on domestic mid-market firms. The honest difference is not just salary, it is which firms even walk through the door.

Batch Quality and Peer Learning

At IIM A, B, or C, your batchmates typically include IIT graduates with 3-5 years at consulting or investment banking firms, CAT 99.8+ percentilers, and people who turned down admits from XLRI and FMS. That peer group sharpens you outside the classroom as much as inside it. New IIMs attract strong candidates, but the average GMAT equivalent profile is lower. Baby IIMs, constrained by lower brand recall, see a wider variance in batch quality. Peer learning, which is arguably 40% of the MBA ROI, suffers accordingly.

Infrastructure and Campus Life

IIM Ahmedabad's Louis Kahn campus and IIM Bangalore's sprawling Bannerghatta Road campus offer libraries, sports facilities, and student clubs that took decades to build. New IIMs operate from permanent campuses with improving infrastructure, though committee culture and alumni networks are still maturing.

Baby IIMs frequently share borrowed infrastructure or operate from temporary campuses, which limits the intensity of student-run committees, case competitions, and the general pace of college life.

How Long Does the Gap Matter?

Here is the uncomfortable truth. In your first job, the IIM tier shapes your starting role, your firm, and your initial salary band.

By year five, personal performance starts to override pedigree, and by year ten, your work portfolio matters far more than your college name. The regret that new IIM graduates often feel in years one and two tends to fade.

But those early years set compounding trajectories, so do not underestimate the initial advantage IIM ABC provides.

The decision is not binary either. If your CAT score puts IIM Indore or Kozhikode within reach but IIM ABC is off the table, those are genuinely strong programs.

If the choice is between a baby IIM and waiting a year to retake CAT, waiting is usually the better call.
