How does life differ for ABM students compared to PGP students at IIM Lucknow?

ABM and PGP students at IIM Lucknow share nearly identical campus lives in Year 1, diverge academically in Year 2, and compete on the same placement floor throughout. The difference is narrower than most applicants expect, and the ₹31.03 LPA average (Class of 2024) is reported as a combined figure, not a separate ABM number.

Year 1: Shared Core, Shared Pressure

IIM Lucknow runs a unified first-year core for both cohorts. You sit in the same sections of 60-70 students, tackle identical case studies, and face the same term exams.

Committee roles in the Marketing Club, Consulting Club, and Finance Cell are open to both streams, decided by merit alone.

Year 2: Where the Paths Split

Second-year electives are where the programs genuinely diverge. ABM students pivot toward agribusiness-specific tracks while PGP students spread across finance, consulting, and marketing specializations.

Despite separate classrooms for these electives, social life stays intertwined. Sports tournaments, club fests, and late-night chai sessions continue to pull both cohorts together.

ABM students frequently audit PGP electives (and vice versa) when schedules allow, blurring the academic boundary further.

Placements: No Separate Queue

Both programs enter the same placement cycle with no separate slots or firm-allocation differences. Your internship performance, CGPA, and interview day execution matter far more than the program name on your résumé.

That said, ABM students do see a natural funnel toward agri-conglomerates, FMCG firms with rural mandates, and commodity-trading desks. PGP students get broader access to pure-play consulting and financial services roles.

Neither is objectively superior; it depends entirely on what sector you want to enter.

The Social Ecosystem: Genuinely Unified

This is the part that surprises incoming students most. Because the batch sizes are close (ABM runs roughly 60 seats versus PGP's larger cohort) and both cohorts share the same Noida Extension-adjacent residential campus, there is no sense of a "lesser program" socially.

Identity on campus is shaped more by your club, your section, and your internship company than by your program tag.

The honest caveat: if you enter ABM hoping to lateral into core finance or consulting roles primarily, the elective gap in Year 2 creates a real preparation disadvantage compared to PGP peers who took dedicated finance or strategy tracks.
