How important is college pedigree (SRCC, IIT, NIT) for IIM shortlisting?
College pedigree adds 2-4 points to your composite score at IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, and IIM Calcutta, making it a real but not decisive factor. It shifts borderline cases in your favor, it does not replace a strong CAT score.
How Pedigree Gets Scored
Each of the three old IIMs builds a composite score from CAT percentile, academics, work experience, and an "application rating" that includes undergraduate institution.
IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore apply this most aggressively.
IIM Lucknow and IIM Kozhikode also reward premier undergrads, but the weight is lower. If Your College Is Not on the List
A non-premier undergrad is not fatal, but this is hard, don't pretend otherwise. You need to compensate with a higher CAT score, ideally 99.5+, and academics above 80% aggregate.
IIM Calcutta's academic score formula rewards consistent marks across 10th, 12th, and graduation, so a 90%+ throughout partially offsets the missing college bonus.
IIM Lucknow, IIM Indore, and IIM Kozhikode are meaningfully more accessible for tier-2 undergrads because their composite scoring weights CAT more heavily relative to pedigree.
After You Get In, Pedigree Fades Fast
Post-MBA, your undergrad college becomes irrelevant within 2-3 years of work experience. Recruiters at McKinsey, BCG, Goldman Sachs, and HUL who visit IIM Ahmedabad (average placement ₹35.22 LPA) or IIM Bangalore care about your current MBA institution and internship performance, not where you did your bachelor's. The pedigree advantage is real but front-loaded, it matters for the IIM entry gate and almost nowhere else later.
Use college pedigree as context, not a crutch. If you have it, your CAT target is 99.0-99.2 for a realistic shortlist. If you don't, your target is 99.5-99.7 and your academics must be clean across all three boards.
