CAT's luck factor is real, measurable, and getting worse, but it still rewards consistent preparation more than any single bad slot can punish it. IIM Bangalore's psychometric team is not careless. The problem is not that CAT is broken.
The problem is that it is optimized for the median aspirant, not for edge cases, and sectional cutoffs at elite institutions are severe enough that a single unlucky slot can eliminate a genuinely strong candidate. This is hard.

Take 80+ mocks under timed conditions across varied difficulty levels. This trains you to adapt when your slot draws a nasty DILR set rather than freeze.
Prioritize DILR and QA for your hardest practice, because VARC normalization is slightly more stable. If slot luck goes badly wrong, XAT (strong analytical focus, XLRI Jamshedpur) and NMAT (three attempts allowed, NMIMS Mumbai) offer credible backup paths to top-15 programs.
CAT is still the most reliable MBA gateway in India. But pretending slot-dependency is negligible does you no favors.
Pro Tip: After each mock, log your percentile by section difficulty and track how often your DILR score swings more than 10 percentile points across similar time investments. That swing range is your real personal variance, and it tells you exactly how much buffer you need above your target cutoff.
