IIM C Admission 2026-27 — Eligibility, Cutoffs, Selection Process & Important Dates

IIM Calcutta's flagship 2-year MBA admission for Batch 2026-28 runs a strict three-stage formula published in the official Admission Policy. Stage I uses CAT 2025 sectional + overall minimums (and a non-negative raw score requirement in every section). Stage II ranks shortlisted candidates on an 85-point composite (CAT 56 + Class 10 = 10 + Class 12 = 15 + Gender Diversity 4 — awarded to female AND transgender candidates). Stage III after PI + WAT uses a 100-point final composite where the Personal Interview alone carries 48 points — the highest PI weight among the top IIMs, making the interview genuinely make-or-break. Work experience peaks at 24-36 months (8 points), then declines; engineers get 0 academic-diversity points while CAs with masters get the maximum 6.

Programme & eligibility (MBA Batch 2026-28)
Programme
2-year full-time MBA · core curriculum + summer internship between years 1 and 2 + electives in year 2 · optional term papers under faculty supervision
Academic eligibility
Bachelor's degree any discipline · min 50% / equivalent CGPA · SC/ST/PwD min 45% · awarded by a university recognised by UGC Act or AIU (foreign degrees require AIU equivalence certificate)
CGPA conversion
Institution's certified method preferred. If the institution has no scheme, IIMC uses: candidate's CGPA ÷ maximum possible CGPA × 100.
Final-year applicants
Allowed provisionally. Must submit a completion certificate from Principal/Registrar dated on or before 30 June 2026 stating all degree requirements complete. Final marksheets due by 30 September 2026 — failure leads to automatic registration cancellation.
Integrated masters / dual
For candidates from integrated masters / dual degree directly after 12th, the institution's certified UG-equivalent marks are used. If UG-PG marks aren't separated, PG marks treated as UG for eligibility and composite score calculations.
CAT requirement
Valid CAT 2025 score · non-negative raw score in EVERY section (a zero/negative in any section disqualifies regardless of percentile)
Stage I — CAT 2025 minimum percentiles (Table 1 of Admission Policy)

Official caveat
"Actual section-wise and overall percentile cut-offs may be much higher than the above-mentioned minimum percentiles as it will depend upon the number of candidates to be called for personal interview (PI) in each category." Realistic Open shortlist ≈ 99 %ile.
Stage II — Composite Score for PI+WAT shortlist (out of 85, per Table 2)
CAT 2025 Score
56 points = (A/B) × 56 where A = candidate's CAT total scaled score and B = maximum possible CAT total scaled score

Gender Diversity Factor
4 points · awarded ONLY to female and transgender candidates · IIM Calcutta explicitly states it "has a highly inclusive academic environment and welcomes LGBTQ+ candidates"
Stage II total
85 points · composite cutoff per category is set at IIMC's discretion based on incoming batch size
Stage III — Final Selection Composite (out of 100, per Table 4)
Personal Interview (PI)
48 points — the dominant component · higher PI weight than any other top IIM
CAT 2025 Score
30 points (down from 56 at Stage II — CAT matters less once you reach the interview)
Writing Ability Test (WAT)
8 points · note evaluated on content and style
Work Experience
8 points · piecewise formula based on completed months as of 31 Jan 2026 (see below)
Academic Diversity
6 points · awarded by category in Table 5 (see below)
Work Experience formula (max 8 points, peaks at 24-36 months)
x ≤ 6 months
0 points (very limited or no work-ex gets no credit)
6 < x ≤ 24 months
x ÷ 3 points (linear ramp from ~2 to 8 points)
24 < x ≤ 36 months
8 points (the peak — IIMC explicitly favours 2-3 yrs work-ex)
36 < x ≤ 48 months
26 − (x ÷ 2) points (declines linearly — more experience starts hurting)
x > 48 months
2 points (heavily-experienced candidates lose points; consider IIMC MBAEx instead)
What counts
Only paid work after completion of bachelor's degree. Internships, articleship, training, projects done as curricular requirement, and unpaid work do NOT count. Must be supported by employer letter on letterhead + payslips. Self-employed: company registration/license/taxes.

Detailed selection process — what to expect at each stage

01
CAT 2025 + Application via CAT portal
Take CAT 2025 (Nov-Dec 2025) · ensure non-negative raw score in ALL three sections (VARC, DILR, QA). Select IIM Calcutta in the CAT application form — no separate IIMC application needed. Application fee ₹2,400 paid during CAT registration.
02
Stage I — CAT Minimum Cutoffs (Table 1)
Open: VARC ≥80 / DILR ≥80 / QA ≥75 / Overall ≥85 %ile. EWS & NC-OBC: 70/65/65/75. SC: 65/60/60/70. ST: 55/55/55/65. PwD: 45/45/45/55. Meeting these alone is just entry — Stage II composite is what gets you to PI.
03
Stage II — Composite Score for PI+WAT (out of 85)
Composite = CAT 56 [(A/B) × 56] + Class 10 marks 10 + Class 12 marks 15 + Gender Diversity 4 (female and transgender candidates only). Class 10/12 use exact slabs (≥80% → 10/15, then 8/12, 6/9, 4/6, 2/3, 0/0). Top candidates per category invited for PI + WAT. Composite cutoff is at IIMC's discretion based on incoming batch size.
04
Personal Interview (PI)
20-30 minutes · panels of 2-3 IIMC faculty (sometimes joined by an alumni member) · wide-ranging: academic background, work experience, current affairs, optional area depth (finance, economics, sector knowledge), and a deep "why MBA / why IIM Calcutta" probe. IIMC panels are known for technical rigour — if you mention finance, expect inverse yield curves, monetary transmission, G-Sec spreads. Generic answers eliminated quickly.
05
Writing Ability Test (WAT)
Note evaluated on content AND style. Held on the same day as PI.
06
Stage III — Final Selection Composite (out of 100)
Final = PI 48 + CAT 30 + WAT 8 + Work Experience 8 + Academic Diversity 6. PI dominates at 48% — a weak PI cannot be rescued by high CAT. Work-Ex peaks at 24-36 months (8 pts), declines after 36 months. Engineers get 0 academic-diversity points; CAs with bachelor's get the max 6. Category-wise merit list prepared.
07
Admission Offer
Offers issued per category-wise merit list. Candidates offered admission for a particular batch cannot defer to a subsequent year for any reason. Misrepresentation disqualifies the application entirely.

Is IIM C Worth It? — Honest Pros, Cons & Who Should Apply

IIM C is genuinely best for
Investment banking, markets, and global finance — the deepest IB pipeline of any Indian B-school
MBB strategy consulting (BCG, McKinsey, Bain) — Cluster 1 placement design favours strategy hires
International careers — ₹110 LPA international highs and CEMS Global Alliance membership
CA / CFA / FRM holders — 80+ in the latest batch · IIM Calcutta is functionally a finance grad school
Non-engineers — Academic Diversity gives 4-6 points; engineers get 0 in final selection
Top 0.5%ile CAT scorers — IIM Calcutta's 99+%ile bar means you're competing with the country's best
Watch out for
!
NIRF #7 (2025) — slipped from #5 in 2024; IIT Delhi DMS broke into top 4, IIM L/M overtook
!
FMCG depth lags IIM Ahmedabad — HUL, P&G come, but ABM role frequency favours IIM A
!
Tech / PM access lags IIM Bangalore — Google, Microsoft, Amazon recruit, but Bangalore proximity helps IIM B
!
Joka location — 25 km from Kolkata city centre, monsoon-prone, genuinely isolated
!
Engineers face -4 to -6 point penalty on academic diversity vs CA / Law / non-engineering peers
!
PI carries 48% weight in final selection — make-or-break interview, not a coast for high CAT scorers
Apply if

Your CAT 2025 is 99+ percentile (Open) and your target is finance, MBB consulting, or international careers; you're a CA/CFA/FRM holder; or you're a non-engineer with strong board marks (80%+ in 10th and 12th).

Consider alternatives if

Your priority is FMCG brand management (choose IIM Ahmedabad), or tech/product management with startup access (choose IIM Bangalore), or you cannot commit to 2 years of fully residential life on a geographically isolated campus.

"You either choose IIM C for finance or you are choosing the wrong programme. Cluster 1 places you in front of Goldman, JP Morgan, BCG, and McKinsey in 48 hours. Nothing in India compares to that 48-hour window."

MBA 2024 alumnus, Investment Banking — Goldman Sachs Mumbai

"I came as an engineer worried about the academic diversity penalty. The PI is genuinely interview-heavy at 48% weight — I prepared for depth in two areas (corporate finance and Indian monetary policy) and that was the right strategy. CAT alone does not get you in."

MBA 2025, IIT graduate, now Strategy Consultant

"Joka is hard for the first three months and then becomes home. The campus density of academic and social life is unlike anything you experience elsewhere — friendships from IIM C are durable in a way that surprises everyone."

MBA 2023 alumnus, currently Director at PE firm in Singapore

"The CEMS exchange to LSE was the highlight of my MBA. Two semesters at IIM C, one at LSE, CEMS MIM degree alongside the IIM MBA — and I ended up with my consulting offer in London. No other Indian school can structure this."
