Which MBA colleges should I choose in India? Tier 1 vs Tier 2 B-schools ranking and placement advice

mixedmixedcollege rankingplacement outcomesROI and fees

Here's the picture that emerges from experienced MBA professionals and alumni when ranking Indian b-schools and thinking through placement outcomes.

The broad tier structure, as we've seen it hold up consistently:

At the top sit the ABC IIMs — Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta. These three remain in a category of their own, and no honest ranking conversation starts anywhere else. Below them, FMS Delhi deserves special attention: its brand value is genuinely comparable to newer IIMs, but its fee structure is dramatically lower, which changes the ROI calculus significantly. The trade-off is campus life and peer network density — IIMs offer more on that front, but FMS holds its own on outcomes.

For students who can't crack the ABC tier, the Tier 2 IIMs — Shillong, Ranchi, Rohtak, Trichy, and Udaipur — are legitimate options worth considering seriously, not consolation choices to be embarrassed about.

A perspective we find genuinely useful for aspirants from tier 3 colleges:

If you're coming from a non-premier undergraduate institution, there's a strong case for targeting newer IIMs rather than grinding indefinitely for ABC. The marginal return on another preparation cycle isn't always positive, and newer IIMs can open doors that are otherwise closed.

Specialized programs and where they fit:

For specific domains — HR, Business Ethics, and related fields — XLRI and SPJIMR rank alongside the BLACKI cluster, not below them. This is a point that often gets lost in generic rankings, and from what we've tracked, professionals in those specialized paths consistently validate it.

Private b-schools: SIBM Pune and NMIMS

Both are credible private options, but fee structures at these institutions make ROI highly batch-percentile-dependent. The honest guidance here: your placement outcome at SIBM Pune or NMIMS is strongly correlated with where you land within your batch. Being in the top 40–50% of your cohort at these colleges changes the math meaningfully. It's also worth noting that experienced alumni perspectives differ on how SIBM Pune compares to some newer IIMs — a strong view holds that SIBM Pune materially outperforms IIM Sambalpur on placements, which cuts against straightforward IIM-always-wins logic.

On placement numbers: what the data actually looks like

At tier 2 and tier 3 colleges — institutions like IMI Delhi or TAPMI — average placement packages tend to land around 8 LPA. To give one concrete data point we've seen referenced from IRMA alumni: a senior moved from 12 LPA as a fresher to 18 LPA within four years post-MBA, which reflects how the trajectory can compound even from non-BLACKI programs when domain fit is strong.

The IIM Lucknow underrating question

There's genuine disagreement here, and we think both sides have merit. One view — held by experienced alumni — is that IIM Lucknow is underrated relative to its actual placement outcomes, and that the gap between its perception and IIM Kolkata or IIM Indore's perception is partly a PR and marketing story, not purely a placement story. Kolkata and Delhi-adjacent schools have historically been better at building visible alumni networks and media presence. That said, perception matters in hiring, so this isn't purely academic.

The most important nuance in this entire conversation:

Batch percentile matters more than college tier. A student finishing in the top 50% of a lower-ranked IIM will, in many cases, outperform a student finishing in the bottom quartile of an ABC IIM — particularly in consulting and finance, where work experience, academic grades, and interview performance drive final outcomes more than the college name alone.

On drops and re-attempts:

The advice we've seen from Tier 1 alumni is clear and worth taking seriously — don't take a drop unless you're genuinely confident of a 90+ percentile. CAT is unpredictable in ways that planning doesn't fully account for, and a year is a real cost.
