Should engineers dominate MBA admissions or should non-engineers get equal opportunities in management education?
This is one of the more charged debates we see regularly among MBA aspirants, and it deserves a careful look rather than a reactive take. The core claim — that engineers are overrepresented in Indian MBA programs — isn't really disputed. By most estimates, engineers comprise 70-80% of applicants, and even with active diversity initiatives, they still make up roughly 55-60% of B-school cohorts today. The question worth asking is: what does that actually mean?
One perspective we've seen from experienced professionals — including those with postgraduate backgrounds in physics, NLP, and other sciences from T1 institutions — is that this distribution reflects demographic realities more than deliberate bias. India produces an enormous number of engineering graduates annually, so their numerical dominance in CAT applicant pools is partly just a pipeline effect. That said, the same professionals are quick to point out that CAT's design does tend to reward the kind of structured, competitive exam preparation that engineering students are more likely to have been exposed to — which is a legitimate structural observation, not a complaint.
At the same time, we've also heard clearly from T1 engineering college graduates who push back on the framing that engineers as a group are analytically superior. The more precise argument is that average engineering students may score higher on quantitative benchmarks than average arts graduates — but this is a statistical average, not a statement about individual merit. IIM cutoffs aren't uniformly higher for engineers out of bias; they're higher partly because engineers make up the largest applicant segment, which compresses the competitive band. Conflating population-level averages with individual capability is where this debate tends to go wrong.
There's a substantive counterpoint worth sitting with: a meaningful share of engineering graduates pursue MBAs specifically because strong placements in core engineering roles didn't materialize. If that's the case, the engineering degree itself isn't functioning as the analytical credential the argument assumes it to be — it's functioning as a career pivot mechanism. This raises a fair question: for management roles that genuinely require domain depth — pharmaceutical management, healthcare administration, FMCG marketing — why should an engineer with no subject-matter background be systematically preferred over a chemistry or English literature graduate who brings precisely that knowledge?
Non-engineer diversity quotas at institutions like IIMs and SPJIMR exist for this reason — not as charity, but because industry has consistently indicated it needs varied academic backgrounds. A marketing function benefits from someone who has formally studied consumer behavior, language, or sociology. A pharma company's management trainee benefits from someone who understands molecules, not just spreadsheets.
The more useful reframe, in our view, is this: the engineer vs. non-engineer debate is in many ways a symptom of a deeper structural problem. India does not have enough high-quality MBA institutions relative to the pool of capable, ambitious candidates across all academic backgrounds. That scarcity forces an artificial competition where different groups end up arguing over a fixed number of seats rather than pushing for the expansion of genuinely rigorous programs. The real conversation — and the more productive one — is about building more institutions that can absorb diverse talent and convert it into effective management capability, whatever the undergraduate origin.
Both engineering and non-engineering backgrounds bring legitimate value to management education. The evidence supports that. What the data doesn't support is the idea that either group has a categorical claim to these seats — or that current representation ratios are the ceiling of what's possible.
