Why isn't a GEM (male engineer) with 99.60 percentile CAT, 9.5/9/9 academics, and IIT degree getting calls from top IIMs despite clearing sectional cutoffs?

0-2 yrsnegativeGEM disadvantage in MBA admissionsCAT percentile inflationWork experience evaluation

For a 26-year-old male engineer from an IIT background — with a 99.60 percentile, 9.5/9/9 academics, and 12 months of work experience — receiving only an IIM Indore call from the BLACKI group is genuinely surprising at first glance. But the picture that emerges from experienced professionals and alumni perspectives makes this outcome more understandable, even if no less frustrating.

The percentile reality in a bigger pool

IIM cutoffs have risen significantly in recent cycles. IIM C typically maintains rank-based cutoffs around 600–650, and IIM A around 500. At 99.60 percentile, that translates to a rank of approximately 1,150 — above most stated thresholds on paper, but still competing within a dense band of similarly high-scoring candidates. What makes this cycle particularly unforgiving is that CAT saw a 40% increase in test-takers, growing from roughly 200,000 to 280,000. That compression in percentile bands means 99.60 this year is not the same competitive position it would have been two or three cycles ago.

The GEM filter is real, and it's steep

The "GEM penalty" is not exaggerated. Male engineers are the single most over-represented demographic across both engineering streams and MBA cohorts, and the top IIMs have structurally higher bars for this category as a result. We've tracked enough profiles across student conversations to say this with confidence: it's not a myth, and it's not unique to this profile.

From what we've seen, a GEM candidate at 98.9 percentile with 9/9/8 academics reported receiving no BLACKI calls at all this cycle. Another at 99.78 received only IIM C. There's a widely circulated view among aspirants — and it holds up — that IIM C does not typically call GEM candidates below the 99.6x range, making 99.60 genuinely borderline rather than comfortably above the threshold. A profile that would earn calls from multiple top IIMs in a different demographic category often clears only one or none in the GEM pool.

Work experience is a quiet differentiator

With 12 months of work experience, this profile likely received around 2 out of 10 points on that component of the evaluation matrix — and quality of experience matters as much as tenure. In our experience, work experience scoring is one of the most underestimated variables in IIM shortlisting, particularly when academics and percentile scores are already high across a large applicant pool. For context, a profile with 98.2 percentile, 9/9/7 academics, and 20 months of work experience received IIM L and IIM S calls — suggesting that stronger work experience evaluation meaningfully shifted outcomes even at a lower percentile.

On the question of what to do next

There are two schools of thought here, and both deserve to be taken seriously.

One view, particularly strong among IIT alumni, is that holding out for an ABC call is worth the attempt — and that a 4th CAT attempt or a gap year is preferable to "settling." We understand why that framing is emotionally compelling, especially given the investment already made.

The more pragmatic view, which we find harder to dismiss, is that MDI Gurgaon, XLRI-BM, FMS Delhi, and IIT Bombay or Delhi's management programmes produce placement outcomes that are genuinely competitive with the lower half of the BLACKI group. From SPJIMR and XLRI alumni perspectives we've engaged with, the tag obsession often matters less five years into a career than individual performance, the quality of the peer network built, and the roles secured through campus placements. A candidate at 99.23 percentile who received no BLACKI calls but converted XLRI-BM made exactly this point — and it's worth sitting with.

The bottom line

This situation is not unusual for GEM candidates in this cycle. The combination of a compressed percentile band, structural category difficulty, and limited work experience points converged against an otherwise strong profile. Converting the IIM Indore call — or a strong alternative at MDI, IIT Bombay, or XLRI — is the rational path forward. A 4th CAT attempt should only be on the table if there is genuine conviction about improving the profile holistically, not simply the percentile.
