What are realistic college targets for General Engineer Male (GEM) candidates in CAT 2024 with varying academic profiles?

For GEM candidates navigating CAT 2024 targets, the honest answer is: it depends heavily on both your academic profile and how you define "realistic."

The starting point that many experienced professionals share is that GEMs with academic profiles below 9/9/9 should orient their primary targets around SPJIMR, MDI, IITB, and XLRI rather than IIMs BLACKI (Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow, Indore) — and even then, 99%ile+ CAT scores are the baseline for realistic conversion chances. That's not pessimism; it's the math of how GEM profiles are weighted in these processes.

That said, we've seen this framing get pushed back on — and the pushback is worth taking seriously, not dismissing. From what we've tracked across alumni conversations and admission outcomes, the picture is more granular than a simple BLACKI-vs-non-IIM split:

  • IIM Calcutta has called candidates at 99.8+ with 9/9/x or 8/9/x profiles
  • IIM Indore has similarly extended calls at 99.85+ with 8/8/x profiles
  • Even IIM Ahmedabad and Lucknow have considered 8/8/8 profiles — but at 99.95+ percentiles

These aren't common outcomes, but they're documented ones. The distinction matters.

Work experience is a genuine variable here, not a footnote. In our experience, 24+ months of work experience meaningfully improves composite scores at institutions like IIM A, B, L, and K, where the holistic review has more room to reward professional trajectory.

We've also heard directly from a GEM candidate who converted IIM Indore with an 8/9/7 academic profile at 99.4 percentile — which illustrates that BLACKI conversion isn't impossible for sub-9/9/9 profiles, just probabilistically harder. The difference between those two framings — "impossible" versus "probabilistically harder" — is something worth sitting with.

A few other points the broader picture surfaces consistently:

FMS and IIFT deserve serious consideration on their own terms, not as fallbacks. Both carry near-100% CAT weightage in their selection process, which structurally benefits strong CAT scorers. Treating them as consolation prizes is a strategic mistake we've seen candidates regret.

The percentile band that makes sense for you depends on your specific profile combination. A rough working framework: target 99.7–99.9+ percentile depending on profile strength, not a flat number applied uniformly.

For candidates with weaker academic profiles — say, 7/6/7 or 8/6/9 — the smarter strategic move, as we've seen borne out in outcomes, is to pursue FMS and XLRI as genuine primary targets rather than stretching exclusively toward BLACKI conversions that the numbers don't support.

The through-line in all of this is the difference between aiming high (which has motivational value and should not be abandoned) and expecting to convert (which requires honest, profile-specific calibration). Both can coexist in your planning — but they should be kept distinct.
