What is an honest ranking of Indian B-schools by quality and outcomes?

mixedmixedcollege ranking methodologyROI vs absolute outcomesplacement quality

Any honest ranking of Indian B-schools is going to attract disagreement — and that's not a flaw in the exercise, it's an accurate reflection of how complex the landscape actually is. We've tracked this debate closely across student conversations, and what follows is our best attempt to synthesize the real picture: the broad consensus, the genuine disputes, and the nuances that a single linear list tends to flatten.

The top of the table is relatively uncontested. IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta sit at the apex, followed by FMS Delhi and ISB's PGP YL program. Where things get contentious is immediately below that tier — and the disagreements are substantive, not just noise.

One of the sharper disputes we've encountered involves IIFT Kolkata's placement relative to IIM Udaipur and SIBM Pune. A significant portion of experienced voices consider that positioning unfair to the latter two. On NMIMS, a perspective we find genuinely worth weighing: the school places 450+ students annually with well-established legacy recruiter relationships, and any ranking that ignores absolute placement volume and recruiter quality in favour of ROI alone is telling an incomplete story. Where candidates begin their careers matters, and NMIMS's scale gives it a different kind of credibility than smaller institutes ranked above it in several lists.

XIMB is a case study in how perception gaps distort rankings. We've seen two distinct camps emerge here. One holds that the institution has a difficult placement culture and administrative friction. The other — typically from people who have actually connected with XIMB alumni — reports strong outcomes and satisfaction. The disconnect may have less to do with actual performance and more to do with visibility: XIMB alumni are notably quieter on LinkedIn, there's limited content on YouTube, and the school generates fewer online conversations than its outcomes might warrant. In our experience, low PR footprint and poor ranking position are not the same thing, but they often get treated as if they are.

Several other specific placements in commonly circulated rankings have drawn credible pushback. Why does IIT Madras rank below IIM Sirmaur? Why does IIFT Delhi appear above XLRI Delhi? Why do newer IIMs outrank established IITs? These aren't rhetorical questions — they point to a real methodological tension. The IIM government tag carries undeniable brand weight, but established private institutions like MDI, XLRI, and FMS have placement records and package data that are competitive with, and in some cases ahead of, newer IIMs. Ranking the brand and ranking the outcome are two different exercises.

In the lower tiers of most rankings, the picture that emerges is that ordering becomes more alphabetical than analytical. Whether GIM or GLIM Chennai belong above new IIMs is a genuinely open question — and reasonable people with good information disagree on it.

The deeper tension running through all of this comes down to what a ranking is actually trying to measure. ROI? Absolute placement numbers? Recruiter quality? Brand perception in the hiring market? Specialisation (MICA for marketing, for instance, occupies a category of its own)? No single metric answers all of these simultaneously, and different students should be weighing them differently depending on their goals, financial situation, and career target.

The consensus that does hold up, in our view: for Tier 1 — IIM ABC, ISB, FMS, XLRI, SPJIMR, MDI — outcomes are genuinely close enough that precise internal ordering is more academic than practical. The differences between these schools in placement quality and package ranges are real but marginal for most career paths. Where rankings add more value is in helping aspirants understand the gap between this cluster and Tier 2, and within Tier 2, understanding which schools punch above their weight in specific domains.

A single linear ranking of 60+ schools was never going to hold up under scrutiny. The more useful exercise is matching the right school to the right student profile — which is exactly what we try to do across our platform.
