A 99.98 percentile is extraordinary, but IIM Ahmedabad's final selection is a different game entirely. We've seen this play out repeatedly: an IITian with a 99.98 percentile, strong academics (8/9/8 across boards and graduation), and a reported strong WAT-PI performance was rejected outright — no waitlist, no call back. The profile was exceptional on paper. The outcome was still a reject.

Here's what the fuller picture tells us:

CAT percentile is a filter, not a guarantee

Once you're in the interview room, your percentile becomes essentially binary — you either cleared the cutoff or you didn't. Beyond that point, it carries no additional weight. IIM A's AWT and PI together account for 50% or more of the final selection weightage. What the panel thinks of you in those 30–40 minutes matters far more than the number on your scorecard.

Work experience changes the equation significantly

Near-perfect profiles across every dimension — academics, test scores, extracurriculars, essay quality, interview performance — are often table stakes, not differentiators. Even then, rejection is entirely possible. For a GEM fresher in this situation, gaining meaningful work experience before reapplying is a genuinely worthwhile path to consider, not a consolation.

Panel perception is the only perception that counts

An interviewer being visibly warm — even as warm as giving a candidate a hug at the end — does not translate to selection.
