A first-year IIM Bangalore student — on their third CAT attempt, with 30+ months of work experience — shared a candid, detailed account of what it actually takes to get in and what to expect once you're there. Here's what we found most valuable from that conversation.

On CAT Preparation

DILR is the section that trips up the most people, and the advice here is unambiguous: no amount of coaching videos substitutes for sustained mock practice. This student used TIME coaching in the early phase, then shifted to a rhythm of weekend mocks combined with daily Cracku practice tests — all while working full-time. Weekday study time averaged 1–2 hours; weekends were more intensive. It's a realistic template for working professionals who can't step away from their jobs.

On mock strategy specifically: the recommendation is 1–2 mocks per week, but with 4–5 hours dedicated to analysis for each one. Taking mocks isn't the work — analysing them is. We've seen this perspective echoed consistently across experienced CAT mentors: the mock itself is just the data; the analysis is where the learning happens. That said, preparation hours vary significantly by individual. We've also heard from students where an IIT graduate cracked IIM C after reviewing a single mock the day before the exam. These outliers exist, but they're not the template to plan around.

On WAT/PI Preparation

For GD-PI, this student enrolled in coaching specifically for mock GDPI sessions and wrote daily responses to past-year WAT topics — a habit that builds both speed and structured thinking. For current affairs, The Hindu was the primary source, used for perspective and editorial depth rather than fact-stuffing. They explicitly moved away from UPSC-oriented channels, which tend to skew toward depth that isn't always relevant for MBA interviews.

The most important insight on interviews: at IIMB, your SOP drives the conversation. Interviewers will probe it, and they expect confident, well-articulated responses. Interview durations at IIM A and B typically run 20–25 minutes, though this student's own interview was 8 minutes — a good reminder that length isn't necessarily an indicator of how you've performed.

On Academics and Profile

A weak undergraduate score makes admission harder, but this student is clear that it doesn't make it impossible. IIMB's criteria have changed year-to-year, which matters when you're assessing your own chances. On Percentile Cutoffs for Non-Engineers or Weaker Academic Profiles
