What is it like working at IIM Calcutta? Placement outcomes, career growth, and work-life balance insights from an alumnus

2-5 yrsmixedplacements and recruitmentwork-life balancespecialization selection

An IIM Calcutta alumnus with approximately 1.5 years of post-MBA experience in corporate strategy at a top Indian conglomerate offers one of the more candid and grounded perspectives we've come across on what life after IIM C actually looks like.

On work-life balance, his honest account is that he clocks 10–14 hour days depending on project deadlines — but he was quick to add that this is "a lot better than many peers." That framing matters. In our experience, WLB after an MBA is rarely a function of the school you attended; it's shaped far more by industry, team culture, and the manager you report to. Expecting a uniform experience, good or bad, is the wrong lens entirely.

On placements, his view is direct: IIM C is "mostly known for finance, consulting, and ops," not FMCG marketing. For candidates who've already secured an FMCG offer from IIM L, K, or I, his advice is unambiguous — take it, don't retake CAT chasing IIM C. FMCG salaries are broadly comparable across tier-1 schools, and the marginal difference in brand rarely justifies the cost of another cycle. This is a perspective we've seen echoed consistently across experienced professionals in lateral and mid-career hiring contexts.

On what actually drives career progression, he makes a point worth underlining: "companies mostly shortlist based on your workex," not just college tier. The quality and relevance of your pre-MBA experience carries significant weight in lateral hiring, often more than the logo on your degree.

On career satisfaction, he offers a balanced and refreshingly honest assessment — "more bad days than good days in corporate, but I'm content." He attributes that stability to challenging work, a strong social circle, and personal hobbies. We've tracked this pattern across alumni conversations: contentment in corporate roles is rarely about daily highs; it's about anchors outside of work and a sense of forward momentum professionally.

One perspective worth considering comes from experienced professionals who caution that 1.5 years post-MBA is genuinely too early for sweeping assessments — "your experience is too less for you to be miserable yet" is a blunt but fair framing. Long-term career satisfaction, or dissatisfaction, tends to crystallise somewhere between the 3–5 year mark.

On specific placement outcomes, the picture that emerges is nuanced. Consulting access from IIM C ranges from Big 3 — which remain difficult to crack at entry level, especially for career switchers from FMCG — to Big 4 strategy practices and boutique consulting firms. Finance roles benefit meaningfully from CFA certification alongside the MBA. Product management shows strong post-MBA demand. And career pivots into marketing or finance via category management roles are a realistic pathway.

On the lower end of the placement spectrum, 18–20 LPA CTC packages did exist in recent batches. It's also worth noting that the 2024 placement season was widely described as "effed up across all IIMs," making some recent batch outcomes something of an outlier rather than a structural signal about IIM C's typical placement health.

The overall picture that emerges: IIM C delivers strong, consistent outcomes in finance and consulting, but maximising those outcomes requires deliberate choices — around specialisation, target role selection, and how you position your pre-MBA experience going in.
