What are the placement issues and controversies at IIM Indore's summer internship cycle?

IIM Indore's summer placements have drawn significant criticism across three recurring fault lines: opaque recruitment processes, placement committee favoritism, and questions around company participation. Here's what we've been able to piece together from multiple perspectives — including some that directly contradict each other.

On BCG's recruitment process

A student from IIM Indore alleged that BCG conducted what they described as a 'secret' recruitment drive, where not all eligible students received equal opportunity to apply. A candidate who did receive a BCG offer from the same batch pushed back on this characterisation, stating that the process "was what was told by seniors" and that while it was "elaborate, that is how it works." A third perspective came from an IIM Ahmedabad student working in recruiting, who noted that BCG's process doesn't include traditional GD or interview stages — suggesting the original concern may have partly reflected a misunderstanding of how MBB firms hire, rather than a deviation from standard practice.

We'd note that MBB hiring conventions are genuinely opaque to first-generation consulting aspirants, and confusion about process design is common. That said, opacity in process doesn't automatically mean fairness in execution — both things can be true simultaneously.

On placement committee favoritism

Multiple voices raised concerns about placement committee (placecom) members receiving preferential treatment — reportedly getting directly into interview rounds or hotlists without clearing initial screening stages. Allegations in the same vein included resume falsification and inappropriate favors being solicited. From the IIM Ahmedabad perspective shared in this context: "people who have connections in BCG can get themselves a shortlist or final convert" — and gender bias toward female candidates was also flagged as a factor in shortlisting.

In our experience tracking student discussions across institutions, placecom favoritism concerns are not unique to IIM Indore. But the specificity of the allegations here — bypassing screening stages entirely, not merely informal networking advantages — points to a structural transparency gap that the institution would benefit from addressing publicly.

On company participation and blacklisting

The picture that emerges here is contested. The student raising these concerns claimed that IIM Indore has been blacklisted by consulting firms including Parthenon and, previously, BCG — and that KPMG withdrew from the current cycle. The broader concern was that McKinsey, Kearney, and Bain don't recruit from Indore at all. A counter-perspective from within the same batch stated that "all resumes are sent" to BCG and that they hired their "expected number of students" from the campus.

We've tracked these kinds of competing narratives before, and the honest answer is that both can be partially accurate: a firm can receive resumes from a campus and still selectively limit its engagement, without ever formally announcing a blacklist. Absence of a formal announcement is not the same as absence of a pattern.

On IPM batch integration into placement statistics

A specific disagreement surfaced around IIM Indore's IPM (Integrated Programme in Management) students. The concern raised was that IPMers — who are essentially fresh undergraduates — are being pushed into the placement pool to inflate headline statistics. The counter-argument was direct: IPM toppers do compete meaningfully and have secured roles at firms like JPMC, DE Shaw, BCG, Morgan Stanley, and Goldman Sachs.

The original concern then sharpened: MBB firms, the argument went, traditionally hire candidates with work experience, not freshers. This is where an experienced voice added useful nuance — BCG does, in fact, regularly hire fresh graduates from top Delhi colleges like SRCC and St. Stephen's, which suggests the assumption that MBB categorically avoids freshers may itself be outdated.

The concerns raised about transparency and merit-based selection at IIM Indore's summer placements are substantive enough to take seriously. At the same time, we've seen across student conversations that institutional criticism sometimes carries incomplete information — particularly around consulting recruitment norms, which are genuinely non-standard and poorly understood outside of those who've gone through them.
