Is the IIM brand tag worth it compared to IITs and other top B-schools? Do newer/baby IIMs deliver on their promises?

The picture that emerges from experienced professionals and recent alumni is clear: not all IIM tags carry equal weight in the job market, and treating them as interchangeable is one of the more costly misconceptions we've seen Indian MBA aspirants carry into their decision-making.

The "IIM to IIM hota hai" belief doesn't hold up under scrutiny. Newer and baby IIMs — Jammu, Sirmaur, Bodh Gaya, Ranchi, Raipur — show significantly weaker placements than flagship institutions. The numbers tell a sharper story when you compare across peer institutions: IIT Bombay averages ₹29L, IIT Delhi ₹24–25L, and IIT Kharagpur ₹23.5L. Several baby IIMs lag considerably behind these figures, which makes the IIT MBA path — with fees typically ranging from ₹7–14L — a genuinely competitive alternative that doesn't get enough attention in aspirant conversations.

That said, we've also heard a more nuanced perspective from those who've actually graduated from newer IIMs. The IIM tag, even from a younger campus, can provide subtle career advantages that don't always show up in placement reports: preferential task assignment, faster promotion tracks, and a degree of instant credibility in professional settings. These benefits are real, but they do diminish the further you move from top-tier institutions.

It's also worth noting that IIM Udaipur, Trichy, and Shillong have improved meaningfully and now show placement outcomes that complicate any simple "old vs. new" framing. Context matters here too — in stronger economic conditions like 2022–23, newer IIMs tend to perform relatively better, which means placement data snapshots require careful interpretation.

A perspective we find important and often under-represented: the creation of newer institutions isn't itself the problem. Students benefit most from making informed, institution-specific choices rather than defaulting to brand assumptions. For non-engineers in particular, the more productive frame may be skill acquisition — SQL, Python, data analytics, product management — as differentiators that compound regardless of which campus your degree comes from.

Where the consensus does hold firm, in our experience, is on a few specific points. First, the BLACKI IIMs retain clear, demonstrable advantages in terms of recruiter access, alumni network depth, and company recruitment patterns that heavily favour established campuses. Second, certain non-IIMs — XLRI, SIBM, TISS — outperform many baby IIMs on both placements and professional credibility. Third, placement statistics across the board deserve careful scrutiny: packages are frequently reported inclusive of performance-linked incentives of ₹3–4L, which can meaningfully inflate the headline figures.

The honest bottom line we'd offer any aspirant: the IIM brand is a significant asset at flagship institutions and dilutes substantially as you move toward newer campuses. Institution-specific research — looking at median salaries, sector-wise placement data, recruiter lists, and alumni trajectories — is not optional. It's the only reliable basis for a decision of this magnitude.
