Should MBA aspirants prioritize IIT MBA programs over premier business schools like IIM, XLRI, and FMS?

The core debate here is whether IIT MBA programs deserve a place alongside IIM, XLRI, FMS, and SPJIMR in an aspirant's priority list — or whether they should be systematically deprioritized. In our experience, the honest answer is more nuanced than either camp tends to admit.

The case for deprioritizing most IIT MBAs rests on structural grounds. The majority of IIT MBA programs run as Departments of Management Studies (DoMS) rather than standalone business schools. That distinction matters in practice: it limits cross-program networking between undergrad and postgrad students, narrows the recruiter pool toward operations and analytics-heavy roles, and generally produces a less immersive b-school environment than a dedicated institution offers. For candidates targeting sales, marketing, or general management roles within India, this is a real limitation worth weighing carefully.

That said, the exceptions are meaningful. SJMSOM at IIT Bombay and VGSOM at IIT Delhi operate closer to proper business schools in terms of infrastructure, recruiter diversity, and outcomes. We've seen this perspective validated by current SJMSOM students themselves — with reports that peers declined offers from IIM S, IIM U, IIM K, and IIM I to join the program, and that even during a difficult placement cycle, the lowest package in the batch held at 18 LPA. SJMSOM's placement profile spans finance, consulting, marketing, and operations — not just the analytics-heavy mix that critics often assume.

The "analytics-only" characterization that gets attached to IIT MBAs more broadly is also worth questioning. From IIT Roorkee's admissions perspective, for instance, their program has secured marketing and HR roles, including placements at organizations like Natwest Group. This doesn't erase the structural differences, but it does mean aspirants should verify actual placement data — through LinkedIn and direct alumni outreach — rather than relying exclusively on official reports or inherited reputation.

On international mobility, the picture that emerges is fairly consistent across multiple experienced voices: IIT brand recognition in the US and UK markets meaningfully outpaces most Indian business schools, including several tier-1 names. For aspirants whose five-year plan involves settling abroad, an IIT MBA — particularly from Bombay, Delhi, or Kharagpur — may functionally outrank programs that carry stronger domestic prestige. This is one area where the standard India-first ranking logic simply doesn't apply cleanly.

On ROI, the consensus tends to be that first-year salary is a poor proxy. The more honest measure tracks compensation, loan repayment trajectory, and role quality over five or more years — and that picture varies considerably by individual career path, not just by institution.

Where we'd land on this: IIT Bombay's MBA is genuinely competitive with XLRI, MDI, and SPJIMR and should be treated accordingly. IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur carry real merit for candidates oriented toward operations, analytics, or international careers. For aspirants whose goals are firmly India-based and span non-technical domains like sales, marketing, or HR, dedicated business schools — XLRI, FMS, SPJIMR — remain the stronger default. The key is to be honest about your own career direction before letting brand rankings make the decision for you.
