What is it like as a first-year marketing student at IMT Ghaziabad? Admission chances, placements, and student experience insights.

From a first-year core marketing student at IMT Ghaziabad — someone with a 96.xx CAT percentile and a 9/9/7 academic profile — the college experience comes across as genuinely mixed, and worth unpacking carefully.

On placements, marketing is performing fairly well as a specialization, but there's a significant caveat: approximately 50% of students in summer internships remain unplaced at any given point. What we've consistently seen across student conversations is that profile strength matters enormously here — even 99.xx+ CAT scorers with weak academic backgrounds have sat unplaced without shortlists. The raw percentile alone doesn't carry you across the line. It's also worth noting that campus internships aren't strictly a prerequisite for strong final placement outcomes. Seniors who secured internships independently — outside of the campus process — have gone on to land final roles in the 18–20 LPA range. The path exists, but it requires proactive ownership.

On admission chances, scores above 96 CAT are generally considered safe territory for core programs. That said, interview performance is where a lot of outcomes diverge. A 6/10 academic score appears to be a real bottleneck — in our experience tracking shortlist patterns, many 99-percentilers carrying 6s struggle to secure exclusive shortlists. It's a combination game, and academics that look modest on paper tend to surface as a liability at the interview stage.

On the nature of roles on campus, approximately 70% are sales-focused. Pure core marketing or strategy roles account for only 10–15% of campus opportunities — a proportion that matters a great deal if your goal is specifically brand management or strategy work. Notable recruiters include FMCGs such as Marico and Britannia, alongside brands like GSK and Adobe. IMT's alumni network is considered a genuine strength of the program, with a meaningful number of alumni now in senior positions at companies like Nivea and Abbott.

One point of contention worth flagging: there is a divergent perspective on the CAT cutoff for calls. While a 96+ percentile is often cited as the comfortable threshold for core programs, an alternative view — held by those with closer visibility into actual call data — puts the functional cutoff closer to 90 percentile. The picture that emerges is that the real threshold likely depends on profile composition, not just the CAT number in isolation.

On fees and scholarships, a 5 lakh scholarship is available for students scoring 98+ in CAT or XAT, with the condition that they maintain a 7.5+ GPA throughout the program. It's a meaningful offset for those who qualify, but the GPA maintenance clause means it isn't unconditional.

The overall sense we get is that IMT Ghaziabad is a viable and reasonably strong option for marketing specialization — particularly for students who come in with a clean academic record, are prepared to perform at interview, and aren't banking exclusively on campus processes for every career outcome. The ceiling is real, but so are the constraints.
