Is an MBA from IIM ABC worth leaving a 27 LPA tech job with 2 years of work experience?

2-5 yrsnegativeopportunity costROI calculationdomain switch necessity

The picture that emerges from experienced professionals and alumni perspectives on this question is fairly consistent: for this specific profile — a 27 LPA tech professional with 2 years of work experience — the calculus is unfavorable in most scenarios, though not universally so.

The core issue is opportunity cost, and the numbers are stark. Leaving now means forgoing roughly 85 lakhs in total — 27 LPA across two years of preparation and program duration, plus approximately 25 lakhs in fees. Even if an IIM ABC MBA lands you a 30 LPA post-graduation role, you're looking at years before you break even. We've seen this framing come up consistently in student conversations, and it holds up under scrutiny. For non-finance roles, immediate post-MBA salaries rarely breach 30 LPA in any meaningful way, which makes the recovery timeline even longer.

From IIM ABC alumni perspectives we've tracked, the clearest pattern is this: professionals who left 25+ LPA tech roles to pursue these programs did so with a specific domain-switch in mind — consulting, investment banking, finance, or VC. They weren't chasing a marginal salary bump. They were buying a credential that functions as a bridge into industries that would otherwise be nearly inaccessible. For someone in a product consultant role without that kind of directional clarity, the financial math simply doesn't work.

That said, we want to be fair to the cases where this decision does make sense. There are four legitimate reasons we've seen justify the move:

First, a genuine domain switch — if finance, consulting, or IB is the goal, an IIM ABC degree remains one of the most reliable bridges available in the Indian market. Second, entrepreneurial ambitions where the alumni network and peer cohort are the actual product you're buying. Third, a clear and considered disinterest in remaining in tech long-term, not just temporary burnout. Fourth, non-financial goals — the peer group, the two-year learning environment, the personal reset — which are real and valid, even if harder to quantify.

On the preparation side, there's an additional layer of risk worth taking seriously. With only five months until CAT 2025 and no prior preparation, the failure probability is meaningful — and critically, the job would be gone either way if you quit now to prepare full-time. A GEM (General-Engineer-Male) profile compounds this further: IIM ABC calls for 99.8 percentile or above for this category, and that's a bar that demands sustained, serious preparation regardless of how strong the underlying profile is.

In our experience, the more sustainable paths for someone at this career stage look like one of the following: prepare part-time while staying employed and preserving the financial cushion; explore an Executive MBA — typically one year with significantly lower opportunity cost; or consider international programs like INSEAD or top-15 US MBAs, where two to three years of strong work experience is actually an asset rather than a limitation.

Staying employed, switching roles or companies for higher compensation, and revisiting the MBA question with more experience and preparation time tends to make more financial sense here. The consensus isn't that an IIM ABC MBA isn't worth it — it's that this specific moment, with this specific profile and without a clear switching goal, isn't the right entry point for that decision.
