What CAT percentile and profile do I need to get admission to MDI Gurgaon? Insights from a current student.

Admission cutoffs at MDI Gurgaon are meaningfully profile-dependent, and the range is wider than most aspirants expect — anywhere from 94 to 98+ percentile depending on who you are and what you're bringing to the table.

For General Engineering Males (GEM) who are freshers with average academics in the 8/8/7 to 9/8/8 range, we'd put the safe target at 97–98+ percentile. That said, calls have come through at 96.xx percentile — it's not unheard of, but you'd be relying on some luck at that score. For non-engineer females and candidates who add academic or gender diversity to the cohort, the bar appears slightly lower. Around 95–96+ percentile is a realistic target, and from what we've tracked across student conversations, a call at 94 percentile is achievable with a strong academic profile — say, an 8/9/8 — in the right diversity category.

Work experience makes a real difference here. Candidates with 1.5–3 years at reputable firms are generally advised to target 96–97+, while freshers — regardless of other factors — need to push for higher scores. We've also seen at least one MDI admit with a 92 percentile and 2.5 years of work experience, which suggests floor scores do exist, though these cases are genuinely rare and shouldn't be treated as benchmarks.

Academics beyond CAT also matter more than candidates sometimes assume. If your Class 12 scores are sub-80%, the advice we've consistently seen is to aim for 97–98+ percentile even if your graduation marks are strong — weaker board scores narrow your buffer considerably.

One important structural point that often surprises applicants: MDI has no reservation policy. EWS and OBC candidates face the same cutoffs as General category, which is worth factoring into your planning from the outset.

On sectional cutoffs, MDI doesn't publish explicit minimums. The picture that emerges is that the institute likely uses a combination of overall percentile and sectional performance rather than hard published thresholds — so a balanced scorecard matters, even if there's no official floor to point to.

A practical piece of advice that resonates with what experienced aspirants have shared: borderline candidates shouldn't hesitate to apply. As one MDI first-year student put it, "you don't know where luck may take you" — and for a form-filling decision, the cost of not applying is higher than the cost of trying. Post-CAT, small internships or certifications can add something to your profile, but the CAT score itself should remain the priority while preparation is ongoing.

Pulling this together: 96–97+ percentile is the practical safe target for most candidate profiles, with GEM freshers needing to push toward 98+ and diversity candidates having slightly more room at 94–95+. The range is wide, but the floor is still competitive.
