What is MDI Gurgaon like? Honest insights on admissions, MBA life, placements, and campus experience from a graduating student

mixedpositiveplacementsadmission criteriaprofile evaluation

An MDI Gurgaon graduate recently shared one of the more candid and detailed breakdowns of the institution we've come across — covering admissions, academics, placements, and campus life with specifics that are genuinely useful for aspirants weighing this decision.

On Admissions

The picture that emerges on CAT cutoffs is this: MDI requires 90+ overall percentile with 70+ in sectionals to receive a call, but conversion becomes "much easier" at 96+. For freshers specifically, 97+ percentile is typically the threshold for realistic core PGDM conversion. That said, from what we've tracked across aspirant conversations, there's meaningful flexibility beyond the headline numbers — this particular graduate, for instance, was a 95th percentile admit, which confirms that lower-percentile candidates do exist in the batch. The advice we'd pass on: let the college reject you, never reject yourself. If you're anywhere near the borderline, attempt the interview regardless of how your chances feel on paper.

On Academics and Undergrad GPA

Your undergraduate GPA does matter to some extent at MDI — and this is worth being honest about. Grades around 6/10 can create real blockers when it comes to consulting and finance shortlists during placements. However, an important clarification we've seen validated by graduates: CAT percentile plays no role whatsoever in placement outcomes. Once you're in, only your MBA academic performance and domain expertise matter. The entrance score is purely a gate, not a signal that follows you.

On Placements

The average package for the core PGDM sits at 28–29 LPA, with 75% of that being fixed pay on average. Tech and product roles — from companies like Amazon, Paytm, and Microsoft — offer 30+ LPA CTC including stocks, with 25–28 LPA fixed. Consulting recruitment is active, with BCG, McKinsey, Kearney, and the Big 4 all coming to campus. But we'd encourage aspirants to be clear-eyed here: MBB roles require near-perfect profiles (9/9/9 academic scores), a Tier 1 undergraduate college, and prior consulting experience. In our experience, these outcomes are realistically in IIM ABC or ISB territory. MDI does place into consulting — but the MBB route demands an exceptional profile by any standard.

One placement detail worth flagging: work experience above three years can cause issues in two-year MBA placement cycles. This is a structural consideration, not MDI-specific, but it's something longer-tenured professionals should factor in before applying.

On the question of placement integrity — placements are not fabricated. The graduate was direct about this. Placement pressure and the associated stress exist, but that's a feature of nearly every B-school in India, not something unique to MDI.

On Campus Life and Fees

MDI is a 50+ year old Tier 1 institution with strong industrial relations and a genuinely diverse peer group — these are real strengths, not marketing copy. Fees for the 2025–27 batch stand at 26 lakhs, expected to rise marginally for subsequent batches.

The first-year experience is described as very hectic and draining, particularly in the months leading up to internship placements. Post that, the pace shifts considerably — second year is characterized as "basically a long vacation with exams in between." This rhythm is fairly common across top B-schools, but it's useful to know going in.

The overall picture of MDI that emerges is of a credible, well-networked institution that delivers solid placement outcomes — particularly in tech and product roles — with consulting access that's real but competitive. For aspirants who clear the admissions bar and arrive with a focused plan, the ROI case is strong.
