What are placement outcomes and academic cutoffs for New IIMs in India?

Based on insights shared by a second-year student at a top-20 New IIM, here's what the picture looks like for admissions cutoffs and placement outcomes — along with some important pushback that adds necessary context.

On Academic Cutoffs

For profile reviews covering 10th, 12th, and undergraduate marks, the benchmarks tend to work like this: an 8/8/8 is considered preferred, 9/9/9 is excellent, and anything below 8 in any single component is viewed as below average. This matters more at New IIMs than it might elsewhere — with cohorts of 400+ students where near-perfect academic profiles are genuinely common, a dip in academics stands out more sharply against the peer group.

For CAT scores, the working thresholds we've seen cited are: freshers need 99+ percentile, candidates with 1–3 years of work experience need 98+. From there, adjustments apply for diversity categories — females receive a -2 point adjustment, non-engineers -1, OBC -3, SC/ST -10, and EWS -2.

On Placements — and Where the Debate Gets Interesting

The average CTC at a top New IIM hovers around 15 LPA, with smaller New IIMs typically coming in 2–3 lakhs lower. On that point, there's broad agreement.

Where perspectives diverge sharply is on consulting outcomes. One view — expressed with considerable firmness — is that fewer than 2–3% of students at New IIMs land top consulting roles, and that these positions are almost exclusively captured by gold medalists and director's list candidates.

We've seen this position challenged directly, and the counter-data is worth taking seriously. At IIM Ahmedabad, 206 out of 384 registered students were placed in consulting roles during SIPs — that's 53.6%. At IIM Calcutta, consulting and finance combined accounted for 60% of SIPs. These are not New IIM numbers, but they were raised specifically to challenge the framing that consulting is essentially inaccessible to anyone outside the top academic tier.

For New IIMs specifically, the more grounded picture that emerges is this: the majority of students — including those with modest academic profiles — do secure roles in FMCG, finance, and sales and marketing at median salaries. The concern isn't that average profiles lead to no placement; it's that premium roles have a genuinely narrower funnel.

What to Make of the Pessimistic Read

In our experience, strongly pessimistic takes on New IIM outcomes are worth scrutinizing carefully. The argument that below-average academics (marks in the 6s and 7s range) completely eliminate placement chances doesn't hold up to scrutiny — the more accurate framing, and one we've tracked across multiple student conversations, is that weaker academics reduce access to premium roles rather than foreclosing outcomes altogether. Strong MBA performance, case competition wins, and developed soft skills have demonstrably moved outcomes for students who didn't arrive with exceptional academic profiles.

The honest summary: New IIMs have real placement ceilings relative to older IIMs, academic filtering at admissions is strict, and top consulting roles are competitive by any measure. But average profiles, handled well across two years, can still produce above-median outcomes.
