Should I attend SPJIMR for MBA if my goal is to get into McKinsey, BCG, or Bain (MBB consulting firms)?

SPJIMR does recruit McKinsey and BCG on campus — but the numbers are worth understanding clearly before you make this decision.

Historically, McKinsey has taken around 4 students from SPJIMR and BCG around 8. Bain does not recruit from SPJIMR at all. Equally important: both McKinsey and BCG visit only for summer internships, which means final placements at MBB happen through PPO conversions — not through a direct final placement process. That's a structural difference from how these firms engage with, say, IIM Ahmedabad or XLRI.

From SPJIMR alumni perspectives, the picture is more nuanced than raw numbers suggest. We've heard from graduates who point to strong MBB outcomes within their batches and from their juniors, and who note a deliberate shift in SPJIMR's campus strategy — with several new consulting firms visiting for the first time in recent years. The institution appears to be actively positioning itself as a consulting-forward campus, which matters for how recruiters engage with it over time.

The honest counterpoint, one we've seen consistently across experienced professionals, is that XLRI statistically offers better MBB final placement numbers — and if securing an MBB offer at placement is a hard requirement for you, that difference is real. That said, Big 4 consulting firms do recruit directly from SPJIMR for final placements, and in our experience, these roles represent a credible 1-2 year transition path into MBB for candidates who perform well.

Something worth weighing: MBB shortlists are never purely campus-driven. We've tracked this pattern repeatedly — not every profile gets shortlisted for MBB even at IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, or Calcutta. A strong, well-positioned profile can crack a BCG shortlist from SPJIMR; a weaker profile may struggle to convert even from a higher-ranked campus. We've seen this play out concretely — there are documented instances of non-IIT, non-CAT-ranker SPJIMR graduates securing BCG offers in the same cycle where candidates from premium IITs with near-perfect profiles failed to get MBB shortlists from IIM Bangalore. The profile matters enormously. If you're genuinely MBB-ready in terms of your CV, getting it vetted by someone who has actually cracked MBB is a more useful exercise than debating campuses in the abstract.

The picture that emerges is this: if MBB final placement is one of several important criteria, SPJIMR is a legitimate path — particularly given its consulting trajectory and the indirect route through Big 4. If MBB is your single non-negotiable destination and you have the XLRI option available, XLRI is statistically the safer choice. ISB, approached after additional work experience, is another route worth considering seriously for MBB aspirants.
