Should I accept admission to TAPMI (Manipal) MBA program? Is it worth joining?

2-5 yrsmixedplacements and averagesfees and ROIwaitlist movement

For a 27-year-old with a Tier 1 B.Tech, 3 years of work experience, and an NMAT score of 228 (converting from waitlist position WL 326 — notably, the waitlist moved 350+ positions on the single day of conversion), the decision to join TAPMI's MBA Core program deserves careful, honest evaluation rather than a simple yes or no.

The case for joining

In our experience, context matters enormously in these decisions. When the alternatives are limited, CAT performance has been around the 50th percentile, the current employer offers no meaningful growth trajectory, and age is already at 27, TAPMI as a Tier 3 B-school can represent a pragmatic and defensible call. From what we've tracked, the Manipal campus environment is generally considered pleasant, and for candidates without stronger competing offers, the opportunity cost calculation looks different than it might for a 24-year-old with multiple attempts ahead.

The concerns worth taking seriously

That said, we've seen consistent caution from experienced professionals and alumni on a few specific points, and these deserve direct acknowledgment.

First, fees: at ₹25 lakhs plus personal expenditure across 2 years, the financial commitment is substantial relative to where TAPMI sits in placement rankings. Second — and this is the sharper concern — placement averages at TAPMI have shown a year-over-year declining trend. The HR specialization, in particular, has seen its average suffer noticeably. Before committing, we'd strongly recommend verifying the most recent placement reports at a specialization-specific level, not just the headline school average.

Third, there's a genuine question about resume stacking: if you already hold a Tier 1 B.Tech, the incremental value TAPMI adds to your profile is worth examining honestly. It doesn't make the decision wrong, but it does mean the MBA needs to work harder for you — through the right specialization choice, active network building, and lateral placements.

On the waitlist data

For those still tracking movement: historically, TAPMI sees significant waitlist progression through May. Last year's movement reached 800+ positions, and there are instances of movement crossing 1,000+ positions. One candidate converted at WL 477 before eventually reaching position 326. These numbers suggest the waitlist can move meaningfully, which is worth knowing if you're holding a higher waitlist number and weighing whether to wait.

Where we land

The picture that emerges is: TAPMI is a reasonable choice under constrained circumstances, not an aspirational one. If this is genuinely the best available option given your profile, score, and life stage, joining with clear eyes is better than deferring indefinitely. But go in having verified placement numbers by specialization and batch year — not just the headline figures — and with a specific plan for how you'll use the two years.
