How to convert TAPMI MBA admission offer and what are chances for different waitlist positions?
TAPMI (Manipal Academy of Higher Education's business school) saw strong conversion activity across its programs, and from the student conversations we've tracked, the picture that emerges is fairly detailed.
On the conversion side, we've seen candidates convert with profiles ranging from a 94.4 percentile with 9/9/8 sectional scores and 2 years of work experience — even without significant GD participation — to a 96 percentile with an 887 CAT score and 15 months of work experience plus a gap year. That second candidate, despite an excellent GDPI performance, landed on the waitlist at position 2500 for Core. So GDPI strength alone doesn't guarantee a direct offer, particularly in high-competition programs.
On waitlist movement, the consensus tends to be that TAPMI sees what many aspirants describe as 'acha khasa' — meaning reasonably decent — movement across programs. From what we've tracked, the approximate benchmarks shared by candidates are:
- Waitlist under 200–300 in HRM and BKFS: Candidates have generally been told they have good chances.
- Waitlist at 400–500 in Marketing: The assessment tends to be 50-50.
- Waitlist above 600–700 in Core: Advisors and peers alike flag this as tough territory.
The second merit list release tends to be a key inflection point — movement patterns become significantly clearer once that drops, so we'd advise waitlisted candidates not to read too much into their position until then.
A perspective worth noting from experienced professionals in this space: Core is generally recommended over specializations for the optionality it preserves, particularly for candidates who are still refining their post-MBA direction. Separately, TAPMI is well regarded in finance, and from TAPMI alumni perspectives, the school carries a stronger edge in finance placements relative to marketing.
For candidates weighing TAPMI against peers like GIM BIFS or GLIM PGPM, the consistent view is that TAPMI holds its own on finance and general management outcomes, with work experience depth and GDPI performance functioning as meaningful differentiators in the selection process. Exact cutoffs, however, do vary by specialization, so treating these benchmarks as directional rather than definitive is the right approach.
