What realistic salary package can an average student expect from a Tier-2 MBA college in India?

freshermixedplacementssalary expectationsTier-2 colleges

For an average student — that's roughly the middle 50–60% of a batch — from Tier-2 MBA colleges like the Baby IIMs, IMT Ghaziabad, IMI, GLIM, GIM, MICA, and TAPMI, a realistic CTC expectation lands between 11–17 LPA. From what we've tracked across student conversations and placement data, the top 50% of these batches typically secure packages in the 10–14 LPA range, with some exceeding that ceiling depending on the role and sector. Fixed compensation — stripping out variables — tends to settle at 11–13 LPA across these institutions, regardless of what the headline CTC figure looks like.

That said, the range is genuinely wide. We've seen perspectives from experienced professionals suggesting outcomes anywhere from 8 LPA to 80 LPA, depending on individual trajectory, preparation quality, and timing — with placement dynamics roughly estimated as 60% luck, 20% past academic and professional performance, and 20% interview preparation. It's an uncomfortable breakdown, but an honest one. Roughly 90% of students do get placed, and in our experience, the unplaced candidates tend to cluster among those with weaker academic profiles rather than being a systemic failure of the institution.

A few important distinctions worth flagging. Baby IIMs sit marginally above the rest of this peer group in terms of brand recognition and door-opening ability — the "IIM" tag carries weight even at the newer campuses. However, there's a legitimate debate about whether schools like IMT Ghaziabad and GIM actually deliver stronger packages and better company quality in practice. The answer isn't uniform, and it often depends on the specific function and sector you're targeting.

If your goal is mid-office investment banking or corporate finance, we'd caution against treating Tier-2 as sufficient ground. Finance-focused alumni perspectives point clearly toward Tier-1.5 schools — NMIMS Mumbai, SIBM Pune, SCMHRD, MDI Gurgaon — as the more appropriate target for those roles, given that Tier-2 colleges remain predominantly marketing-heavy in their recruiter mix and placement ecosystems.

The picture that emerges is this: 13–17 LPA is achievable and genuinely respectable as a starting salary from these institutions. But actual outcomes are determined far more by individual variables — upskilling, CV quality, case study competency, internship performance, and functional clarity — than by the college name alone. The college opens a door; what happens inside the room is largely on you.
