How to prepare for XAT 2026 after a disappointing CAT 2025 performance: self-study strategies and resources

For anyone who's come out of CAT 2025 feeling underwhelmed, XAT 2026 is a genuine second shot — and the preparation window is shorter than most people think. Here's a grounded breakdown of what actually works, drawn from the experience of someone who scored 98.9 percentile in XAT 2025 after a 95 percentile in CAT 2024.

Quantitative Ability

XAT quants is meaningfully easier than CAT quants — that's not just reassuring talk, it's a structural difference worth internalizing. Your CAT fundamentals carry over directly, but you'll want to layer on XAT-specific topics: mensuration, geometry, and modern mathematics deserve targeted attention. Formula-based topics tend to yield quick wins here, so prioritize those if you're short on time. Don't rebuild from scratch — sharpen and redirect.

Decision Making

This is XAT's most distinctive section and the one that most CAT-focused aspirants underestimate. The resource that consistently comes up — and which we've seen corroborated across multiple experienced voices in our student conversations — is DM1000, a paid video course by Gejo, structured similarly to VARC1000. It's widely considered the strongest dedicated resource for this section. If budget is a constraint, it circulates in Telegram study groups. There's no credible shortcut around putting serious time into DM — it's the section that separates XAT scores from CAT-transfer scores.

Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning

Apply the VARC1000 framework and complement it with previous XAT year papers. One pattern worth noting: poem-based Reading Comprehensions appear almost every year. Read actively, make notes while reading, and don't skim. XAT verbal rewards careful reading more than CAT verbal does.

Mock Strategy and Past Year Papers

This is where we'd encourage a mindset shift. Past XAT papers from 2018 onwards are your primary mocks — full stop. There's limited evidence that expensive mock series add proportionate value for XAT specifically. Solve the actual papers under timed conditions and treat them seriously.

On timing: XAT has no sectional time limits, which meaningfully reduces the pressure that makes CAT so unforgiving. That's a structural advantage worth using strategically.

Managing Multiple Exams Simultaneously

For those juggling NMAT, SNAP, and XAT in the same window — which most aspirants are — the approach that works is using each exam as preparation for the next, rather than running parallel subject-specific prep tracks. The overlap in fundamentals is high enough that this works, and it prevents the burnout that comes from treating every exam as a separate mountain.

XLRI Interviews and Realistic Expectations

A few honest observations on the conversion side. XLRI interviews are character-focused rather than knowledge-heavy — they're probing for who you are, not what you've memorized. GK carries minimal weightage in the scheme of things: 20 questions, 10 minutes, no negative marking. Don't over-invest there.

That said, it's worth being clear-eyed about the numbers. A 98.9 percentile in XAT does not guarantee XLRI conversion. The competition at the top 0.1% is intense, and interview performance is a genuine differentiator. For GEM profiles — a 9/9/9 combination of academics, gender, and work experience — realistic XLRI chances begin at 99 percentile and above. Below 97 percentile, the returns on XAT effort narrow considerably if XLRI is the primary target.

The Broader Point

Panic is not a preparation strategy. Disciplined self-study, serious engagement with DM1000, and consistent PYQ practice are sufficient — you don't need expensive coaching to navigate XAT well. The path from a disappointing CAT to a strong XAT is well-worn, and the tools to walk it are largely accessible.
