What is MBA life really like at XLRI? Honest advice on placements, culture, domains, and survival tips

An XLRI BM '23 alumnus offered some of the most candid and grounded guidance we've come across on what it actually means to navigate a top-tier Indian MBA program — and it's worth unpacking carefully.

On domain selection, the advice is clear: choose a domain where the college has structural placement strength and where your interest is genuine. For XLRI BM, consulting and marketing are the default high-placement domains — they absorb the largest number of students and have the deepest recruiter relationships. That said, this alumnus personally secured a Product Management role despite navigating real tech sector headwinds, which tells you something about what focused preparation can still achieve. The domain you pick shapes your entire two years, so don't drift into one because it feels safe.

On work-life balance, the advice cuts against the grain of B-school mythology: sleep 7–8 hours. The 16-hour grind culture exists, it will surround you, and it will feel like the only way to keep up. In our experience tracking student feedback across programs, this pressure is particularly intense in the first semester. But sustainable effort consistently outperforms burnout — and XLRI's academic load is serious enough that you need cognitive sharpness, not just hours logged.

On placements and identity, this is perhaps the most important thing we've seen an alumnus say directly: do not define your self-worth by your internship or final placement outcome. The mathematics are uncomfortable but real — students who were in the top 1% nationally to even get into XLRI will often find themselves in the bottom 20% of their own cohort. That's not failure. The odds are real, and preparation needs to match them.

On consulting specifically, there is genuine disagreement worth flagging rather than smoothing over. Some experienced professionals in this space argue that IIM Lucknow now has a structural edge in consulting placements — pointing to MBBK firm preferences and noting that firms like A&M and Monitor Deloitte have stopped visiting XLRI campuses. Others, including this alumnus, maintain that XLRI and IIM-L are broadly at parity for consulting outcomes. We'd encourage applicants to verify current recruiter presence directly rather than relying on batch-to-batch anecdotes. Finance is a known weak spot at XLRI — this is consistent feedback, and if finance is your primary target, that matters in your school selection.

On operations management and analytics, a perspective worth highlighting from fresher-background aspirants: these domains typically require relevant work experience to be competitive, particularly for non-engineers. Coming in without that background and targeting ops or analytics is an uphill path.

On product management more broadly, professionals who have worked in PM roles before their MBA note that product companies frequently value direct experience over the MBA credential itself. The degree helps open doors, but it doesn't substitute for demonstrated product thinking. If PM is your goal, what you build before and during the program matters enormously.
