Is XLRI Jamshedpur at par with IIM ABC? Why do people prefer IIM over XLRI?

mixedmixedcollege rankingsplacements and outcomesIIM brand value

From what we've tracked across experienced professionals and alumni perspectives, XLRI Jamshedpur is broadly at par with IIM ABC for most career outcomes — though the nuances are worth understanding carefully.

An XLRI '23 alumnus from the Business Management programme laid out the hierarchy this way: for consulting, it reads A=B=C>L=XL>FMS=I=K, while for finance it shifts to C>A>B>L>XL>I>K>FMS. For HR specifically, the picture is unambiguous — XL sits well ahead of the IIMs. From an FMS alumni perspective, the view is that ISB, FMS, XL-J and SPJIMR are all four at par with Lucknow, Indore, and Kozhikode, though ABC gets an edge because some companies open exclusively to them and they attract what was described as particularly strong incoming profiles.

A corporate professional with 15+ years of experience working alongside graduates from IIM A, B, C, L, K, XL, MDI, and IITs put it plainly: "there is not much of a difference between these B-school students." And yet, the same professional acknowledged that IIM A, B, C would still be a first choice — which tells you something important. The preference isn't always about outcomes; it's often about external perception and the weight the tag carries with people who aren't inside MBA circles.

In our experience, the IIM preference tends to come down to three factors. First, brand recognition outside MBA-aware circles — the IIM name travels further in conversations with family, clients, and non-MBA hiring managers. Second, exclusive company visits: certain firms restrict their on-campus presence to specific IIMs. Third, and honestly, herd mentality — people pursue IIMs in part because that's what people around them pursue.

From SPJIMR alumni perspectives, the view among recruiters is that XLRI and FMS sit at par with BLACKI, with only negligible biases in either direction. One distinction worth flagging: XLRI's placement reports are audited, which makes them more transparent and comparable than non-audited reports from several other B-schools — something we think deserves more attention when aspirants are evaluating reported numbers.

We've also seen this point raised by CAT repeaters weighing another attempt: XLRI has stronger consulting placement diversity compared to IIM K and I, whose lower-half batch placements reportedly became difficult in recent market conditions. The broader consensus that emerges is this — if you're not going to land in the top 10–20% of your batch securing premium IB or MBB roles, ABC and XLRI offer comparable opportunities across most functions and sectors.

The advice we've consistently seen from experienced professionals is direct: don't defer a confirmed XLRI seat for another CAT attempt unless you have strong reason to believe you'll crack ABC. XLRI is at par with BLACKI, and five to six years into your career, the distinction matters considerably less than the work you do and the network you build. In HR specifically, you'll find more XLRI alumni in senior positions at large companies than from most IIMs.

If XLRI is your best current option, the weight of perspectives we've seen — across alumni, working professionals, and recruiters — suggests taking it seriously rather than treating it as a fallback.
