Do IIM placements reflect CAT percentile or college performance?
IIM placements reflect MBA performance far more than CAT percentile. The entry ticket is CAT, but career outcomes depend almost entirely on what you do during the 2 years inside.
What actually drives placement outcomes
Once you're inside an IIM, the admission percentile stops mattering. Recruiting firms evaluate candidates on:
- CGPA across 15-20 courses (relative grading means your rank within the batch matters, not just your absolute grade)
- Summer internship performance and whether it converts to a PPO
- Case competition wins and club leadership
- Finals placement strategy and interview execution
The bottom 10% of a batch typically receive academic warnings. The top 20% unlock access to premium recruiters early.
A high CAT entrant who coasts through the first year can easily end up below a lower-percentile entrant who finishes in the top quartile academically. Entry rank does not lock in outcomes.

A summer PPO from a top consulting firm is arguably the most consequential placement event in the entire 2-year program. Most PPOs in this category convert to final offers, which is why first-year performance carries such disproportionate weight.

These batch averages are exactly that - averages. Within each batch, the spread is wide.
Students who execute well across internship and finals typically land well above the average; those who don't, land below it, regardless of where their CAT percentile sat on admission day.
The pre-MBA vs in-MBA distinction
Pre-MBA, category and academic-diversity criteria influence shortlisting. A non-engineer or SC/ST applicant may be shortlisted at a lower overall percentile.
Once inside, none of that carries forward into placement. Firms recruiting on campus have no visibility into your admission percentile and no interest in it.
What this means if you're planning ahead
If you're at the same IIM as a peer who scored 99.5 vs your 97, your placement ceiling is not lower. The gap that matters is the one you build or lose during the 2 years. The priorities in order are:
