How IIM shortlisting actually works
IIMs do not rank candidates on CAT percentile alone. They use composite shortlisting formulas that assign explicit weights to your Class 10 marks, Class 12 marks, and graduation marks alongside your CAT score.
9+ percentile improves your CAT component score substantially, but it cannot zero out a low academic component. The academic weight in these formulas is fixed - a poor graduation GPA or low board marks will drag your composite down regardless of how high you score on the CAT.
Backlogs are a separate, harder problem
Weak marks and backlogs are not the same issue. Low marks hurt your composite score at the shortlisting stage.
Backlogs can eliminate you before that stage even begins. Some institutes filter out candidates with active or historical backlogs at the application screening itself, regardless of percentile.

Candidates with weak graduation marks but strong CAT scores often clear shortlists at schools where the composite formula weights CAT more heavily:
- FMS Delhi: avg Rs 32 LPA (2024 batch), fees approximately Rs 2L, and the admission process is heavily CAT-driven
- SPJIMR Mumbai: avg Rs 33 LPA (2024 batch), uses a holistic profile assessment where a very high CAT score carries significant weight
- MDI Gurgaon: avg Rs 26 LPA (2024 batch), accepts CAT, and academic history is factored less rigidly at the shortlist stage than at older IIMs
These are worth targeting seriously alongside newer IIMs if your academic record is weak.
What a 99.9+ percentile does and does not do
9+ percentile is rare enough that some institutes will shortlist and interview such candidates despite academic red flags - it signals real ability and institutes know that. But interview conversion is a separate question.
At the final offer stage, interviewers at older IIMs will often directly probe poor academic performance. A credible, honest explanation - personal circumstances, a career pivot, or demonstrated professional growth - matters at that point.
A high percentile gets you in the room. It does not close the deal.
The honest summary: for IIM A, B, or C, a high percentile is necessary but not sufficient if your academic record is weak. For newer IIMs, FMS, SPJIMR, and MDI, a very high percentile is the primary driver and gives you a realistic path in.
