Why didn't I get IIM A/B/C calls despite scoring 99.76 percentile?

A 99.76 percentile CAT score is outstanding, yet IIM A/B/C calls can still slip away, and the culprit is almost always your past academic scores dragging your composite below the shortlist threshold. This is a math problem, not a judgment on your ability.

How the Composite Score Works

IIM A, B, and C don't shortlist on CAT percentile alone. Each uses a weighted composite that assigns significant marks to 10th, 12th, and graduation scores. The scoring follows a non-linear curve that punishes sub-80% academic records disproportionately:

A single 7/10 in your 10th costs you 3-4 composite points versus a peer with 9/10. At IIM C, where the composite cutoff for General Male Engineers sits around 62, a score of 58-60 means no call, even at 99.76. That gap is purely arithmetic.

The Gender and Category Multipliers

Category and gender diversity stacks on top of academics. OBC-NCL, SC, and ST candidates receive category relaxation of roughly 5-25 percentile on the CAT cutoff itself. Female candidates get an additional 3-5 percentile effective boost in composite weighting. A 99.2 GNEF (General Non-Engineer Female) with consistent 8s in her academic record is often better positioned than a GEM (General Engineer Male) at 99.76 with a 7 anywhere in his history. This is hard to accept, but it is how the formula works.

IIM A's AC-3 Stage Is the Hidden Filter

IIM Ahmedabad shortlists in two stages. Stage 1 uses CAT plus academics.

Stage 2 (AC-3) evaluates academic profile and diversity independently, with CAT score playing a smaller role. A GEM engineer with any sub-75% academic score frequently clears Stage 1 but gets eliminated at AC-3, making the call feel arbitrary when it is actually formula-driven.

There is no workaround here; the gate is closed for this cycle.

Where 99.76 Still Converts

Your score is strong enough for excellent programs that weight CAT more heavily:

• FMS Delhi: CAT cutoff around 98.5 for GEM; your score clears comfortably
• MDI Gurgaon: Typical cutoff near 99+; high conversion at interview stage
• IIFT Delhi: Sectional cutoffs matter more than composites; 99+ is competitive
• IIM Lucknow: Shortlists around 97-98 for GEM; strong PI can seal the deal
• SPJIMR Mumbai: Profile-based process that rewards work experience and essays

FMS average placement around ₹34 LPA and IIFT at ₹28 LPA are legitimate outcomes from this score. Don't treat them as consolation; treat them as targets worth converting aggressively.

One More Cycle vs. Moving On

If IIM A/B/C is non-negotiable for you, a repeat attempt with the same academic history won't change the composite. The only lever you control is your CAT score itself, pushing above 99.9 percentile to offset the academic deficit at IIM B or C.

IIM A's formula at current cutoffs is nearly impossible to clear with sub-75% in any academic stage as a GEM, regardless of CAT score.

Not getting the call at 99.76 is brutal. But it is predictable once you run the numbers.
