Why doesn't a 99.76 percentile CAT score guarantee IIM calls when academic profile is weak?

A 99.76 percentile on CAT — AIR roughly 650, built on 7–8 hours of daily preparation, 70+ mocks, and 400+ sectionals — is a genuinely exceptional outcome. And yet, for a candidate with this exact profile, no calls came from IIM A, B, C, K, or L. Understanding why matters, because this situation is far more common than most aspirants expect.

The core reason is straightforward: IIM admissions are not percentile-driven alone. A 7/9/8 undergraduate profile (UG GPA / 10th / 12th) functions as a hard filter at most top IIMs, regardless of how strong your CAT score is. IIM C, for instance, explicitly requires 80+ in both 10th and 12th grades and assigns full weightage to academic scores in its shortlisting formula. A UG score of 7 doesn't just reduce your composite — in several IIM shortlisting models, it disqualifies you before the percentile is even meaningfully weighed.
