What is DSE MBA program like for batches 2025-2027? Admissions, placements, and program comparison
Delhi School of Economics (DSE) offers three MBA specializations — Business Administration (BA), International Business (IB), and Human Resource Management (HRM). Across all three streams, the average package sits at 13–14 LPA, with the lowest offers coming in around 7–8 LPA. Placements span general management and analyst roles, with 80–90% of the batch eventually placed. That said, summer placements have been a known weak spot — from what we've tracked through admitted student accounts, only 4 companies visited for summer placements, taking 8 students from a 55-person batch. That's a number worth sitting with before you decide.
Admissions
DSE uses CAT percentile as its primary filter, with no sectional cutoffs for general category candidates. Starting 2026, GDPI (group discussion and personal interview) carries 30% weightage — a meaningful change that shifts the equation slightly away from pure CAT scores. Category-wise, the expectations that emerge from student conversations are: OBC non-engineers typically need 70–75%+, SC candidates around 50–60%+ depending on academics (10th, 12th, and graduation scores), and general category candidates 75%+. We've consistently seen the perspective from experienced professionals that even at 98%+ CAT, candidates should exhaust tier-1 IIM options before settling on DSE. That's not a knock on DSE — it's just honest prioritization.
DSE vs. Baby IIMs — A Honest Comparison
This is where perspectives diverge, and we think it's worth presenting both fairly. On one side, newer IIM graduates benefit from growing brand recognition and the IIM tag itself — a real advantage in recruiting circles that's only getting stronger over time. DSE, by contrast, has relatively stagnant branding. One view we've encountered frames this starkly: the gap in long-term ROI can resemble the difference between a community college and an Ivy League — strong words, but the underlying point about brand compounding over a career isn't entirely wrong.
The counter-perspective, and one we find grounded in reality too, is that ability ultimately matters more than brand alone — and there are unplaced candidates even from Baby and New IIMs. DSE's fees are also significantly lower: approximately ₹60,000 per semester plus ₹60,000 for placement activities. For candidates from lower-tier institutions or non-engineering backgrounds where IIM conversion odds are genuinely lower, DSE can represent a sound value-for-money decision. For those who want to revisit brand premium later, an Executive MBA from ISB remains a viable long-term path.
Program Specifics
Among the three specializations, IB is consistently regarded as the strongest choice. BA has a slightly easier cutoff. Mathematics is not mandatory for the BA track but is required for DFS and DBE streams. Most students live in private PGs rather than DU hostels. The academic environment is described as relatively relaxed, with a 75% attendance requirement.
On the placement sector mix: finance roles are limited. The bulk of placements are in consulting and general management. For candidates with a moderate academic profile — say, a 7/7/7 scores pattern — GDPI performance becomes especially critical for both admission conversion and eventual placement outcomes. Some chance exists even with that profile, but the margin for error is thinner.
One Honest Caveat
Some uncertainty exists around the sourcing of certain first-person details shared by admitted students in forums. We flag this not to dismiss the information — much of it aligns with what we've seen across student conversations — but to encourage prospective applicants to verify placement data and batch composition directly with DSE's admissions office before making decisions.
The overall picture for DSE MBA is cautiously optimistic, particularly for fresher non-engineers and engineers from lower-tier institutions who are seeking a value-conscious MBA with reasonable placement outcomes and a manageable fee structure.
